First off - thanks to Shams and Fazal for positing the event here and inviting us 'road-blubbers' to this wonderful event.

It was a real eye-opener and the 'Jeeping skills' on display left all of us mere drivers more than a little humbled.

I was lucky to reach there a little early and see the fabulous machines all lined up. A little walk to admire the Mahindras, Kaisers, A solitary Land Rover, the 'low bonnets', the massive 4X4 SUVs and gypsys and we were set to watch and learn!

I noticed right away - two things made a huge impact - driver skill and tyres. The skinny 'sand duellers' and 'Mud, Sand and Slush lugs', (I am an ignoramus and am not sure that those are the right names - please pardon me) seemed to be the best for the terrain.

A few vehicles caught my eye and made a lasting impression: One was a Judo made by Force motors which covered the whole course with a cool non-chalance. Next was the VW Touareg (V10) who climbed the first major incline as if it were a ramp for wheelchairs, it then went on to neatly skip over the other hazards and challenges before crossing the slush without even getting it's running board wet. One more vehicle was a metallic(?) deep green Jeep with a petrol engine which seemed to truly enjoy the fare being dished out by the organisers today.

A few ladies and gentlemen made the whole course look like child's play with their precision handling of the vehicles. So awe-struck were the TBHPians - that for once the food did not distract us, neither did the red-bull (it might have been different though if numbers were being handed out ).

Two under 10 year olds, stole our hearts by the manner in which they sat - perfectly poised, perched on the rear seat of a Jeep, anchored with one hand while using the other to support themselves on the rear seat, they sure looked like they enjoyed the ride that beat anything that an amusement park can dish out!

Thanks to Fazal saab, I came away learning a wee bit about OTR (1) Leave the cosmetics out (no not referring to the human race - but mods on the vehicle), (2) It is all about maintaining momentum, (3) Power should be used wisely - gun the engine when required (mostly short bursts). My own observation - the petrol engined vehicles seemed to be having more fun on the track.

Someone was mentioning that the Hyd OTR chaps are planning to have a meet every season of the year. Wild horses could not keep me away!

You may skip my writeup as Ravindra's (many more v's, r's, d's in the name) write up is there and no one on T-BHP can I believe can beat his.
The sunday, summer morning in Hyderabad saw this OTR kicking off in style, though I did not get a chance to meet Shams and Giridhar Reddy the “Jeep Thrills” organizers who were the key players of this magnificent show. 50+ entries I heard. The first incline was a nightmare for some I heard.
The rest was action every minute, Kaisers dominated, Pajero's, MM540/550, Willys, Ford, VW Taureg, Land Cruisers, Gypsies and a lone Judo and Land Rover were all there.
The track was good and the first uphill was long and tricky, got worse for the guys who were in the later part, as the earlier guys loosened up the soil no end. Slush was an easy ride for, the long last 60-degree incline at the finish line was challenging, but not to beat the first one.
Mrs. Shafahat Ali Khan eased through like it was flat as a landing strip, in the Judo, Ssarmast (Salman) too made it look like the “Silk Route” in the beige Land Cruiser, Gypsies showed their prowess, Wads78 went on effortlessly in his 540, the VW Taureg sailed through effortlessly so did the Pajero's. Landrover had some initial hiccups like half a dozen other 4X4’s. There were others who I did not recognize as I was perched high above armed with my Canon 400mm (excuse me for that lapse) and not all could I accommodate in the posting here.
Then we all did what Hyderabadi's do best... EAT!
There was a grand, loaded lunch pavilion but quite a many guys got their RV's and fabulous homemade food, Biryani ruled the day.
Can’t really tell who came for what.... OTR or LUNCH's.
Mr. Ravi Raju was a most gracious host, calling many lucky ones to his RV for a fantastic home made lunch.
I was too busy shooting and after that attacking the food, and missed the opportunity to photograph the judges or the winners of today’s event
Nearly... felt a WINNER as I did maximum justice to the food.
Met fellow T-BHP guys which completed the story.

Hi Everyone,

Amazing is not the word. Very good collection of Jeeps and other offroaders. The pics clicked are awesome.
I notice a lot of Kaisers there in Hyderabad. But none kept in its original glory. The Kaiser is just an awesome Jeep and looks killer if kept original. They are very hard to get.
If anyone has any SWB Kaiser for sale or knows of any on sale please let me know, provided its not modified and is original even in a bad state.

The slush should be where the participants dread getting in and out, a driveable boulders track is a must. I noticed that nearly all participants made it out quite effortlessly (except about 6) though it was not an easy course.

Seems like an awesome event.real Jeep thrills im sure were witnessed.For a minute i wasnt sure if my Tata Sierra could have faced the dirt track...actually never subjected my beast to this torture..hence the uncertainity.

Dont even think about your Tata Sierra on this track, it is not beast enough! it was gruelling, as more than half a dozen 4X4's could not complete the event.

Amazing observation about the "still in Dubai" part, if we see it the other way and assume that this flight was taking off from Hyd- Dubai, would they be thinking Dubai... is it so close to Hyderabad.

Dear shams & hyderabad 4wd guys,

What a show of immaculate 4wds? Iam spell bound by the workmanship on these jeeps and other 4wds. Can some one provide an acocunt of how each 4wd performed? What were the obstacle course?

p.s - I miss hyderabad a lot!! Truly a nawab's city with their Nawab like vehicles:-)))
