The Scorpio runs a 2.6. Steigers Classic is running on a stock 2.1 XDP diesel while mine is running the Bolero's 2.5 XD3P diesel.

Slightly OT,

Thats a beautiful looking CJ3A, but the owner has killed its looks by over-doing it with shovel, spade, gun rack, blackout lights etc. To each its own I guess. I must say that he has maintained it well and he cares of the JEEP, I could see the free wheeling hubs.

GTO, can you give us some more details about this JEEP ?? Did it have the original Go-Devil Petrol engine or was it retro-fitted with a Diesel powerplant.

@ Vinod - The Defender is running a DCM Toyota engine.
@ sabareesh - The Jeep is running a 2000cc Isuzu Diesel unit.

LOL! The first thing I noticed on his Jeep were the Lambda free wheeling hubs and a 4x4 transfer box. Don't know how the Isuzu 2.0 diesel would perform though. Is it a torquey unit?

No idea about that Engine, have never seen such a set up off-road, Maybe Arka can enlighten us about this setup if he has experienced anything similar down south.

I wonder what gearbox and transfercase combo is he using. Originally the CJ3A had the Willys Go-devil Engine, T-90 transmission and Spicer T-18 transfer case.

Its an interesting JEEP though. Please count me in for the next off-road trip. My JEEP is dying to get its shoes dirty.

The 2.0 diesel produces 108Nm (roughly the same as a Gypsy MPFi) compared to 135Nm of the 1800ISZ petrol.

woke up at 4 that morning cause i needed to move out early and pick up my car from my office, joined the rest of the gang at panvel
u know whats really cool and we should keep it up
its our punctuality, Spot On
was happy to see new faces hear and always a pleasure to see the gypsy



regrouped at the petrol pump at lonavala met up with 4wddrifter
from here after a quick introduction to each other, headed to our previous spot, just to find it even more tempting this time around cause the normally deep water-filled terrain was dry so we had more ground to play with.

Gto nearly toppling over, but must admit that guy has guts, we all backed out after watching him, was too much of a risk and my cars high CG never wanted me to attempt it even. hats off to
you not only for trying it , but also succesfully
im sure there wont be any pictures of that episode cause everyone was either running to stop the car from toppling or just standind with their jaws wide open.
thankfully all ended well

After decending from that hill me in my defender along with aditya and 53bhp move along searching for more challenges, i spot this slushy area with a steap ascend after it and decide to have a go, other occupants advising me against it, well anyways i had a go.
WRONG DECISION
ended up getting stuck in what seemed like 2 feet of muck,
had to get on top of my car to reach for the towing rope for gto to pull me out, finally after few attempts got out and learned a valuable lesson
HAVING VERY GOOD MUD TERRAIN TIRES DOES NO MEAN YOU ARE INVINSIBLE ON MUD. THERE ARE LIMITS TO EVERYTHING...im sure someone has pics of this

lastly thanks to my possibly bad vision went over a sharp stump and also an even sharper stone to puncture my side wall.
my mistake or shear bad luck. don't reall know, hoping its the latter though.

I have been for a couple of OTRs earlier but when i compare it to this one, they were mere hill climbs. This was the real Mcoy, at for me.

The Day started out with us assembling at Sion, 0600 hrs sharp. I am very impressed with everyone being on time.

Participants:

1) GTO in his Bolero engined Classic
2) Aditya
3) Satan in his Gypsy King
4) Steiger & Family (wife and Steiger junior) in his Mahindra Classic
5) V-16
6) 53bhp

at Vashi, we were joined in by

7) Xtreme power in his Landrover Defender.

and at Lonavala we were joined in by

8) 4Wdrifter and his friend in his Forester.

I hopped in to Satan's immaculate one year old Gypsy King. We decided to take the old road to Lonavala and was pleasantly surprised to see it immaculately maintained. The drive to Lonavala took all of 1.5 hrs from Sion. The weather was not sohot in Lonavala and most of Lonavala seemed to be overcast. A sign of cool previous night.

A quick idli & tea/coffee stop at Kamats Green House Lonavala, courtesy GTO, we headed to the designated area, Tungarl Dam. All 4x4s were stacked with enough water (you wont believe how much of the stuff you can drink on an outing like that) to keep everyone hydrated

I present a pictoral report, my modest attempt at making each one of you a 4X4 addict. Hope you enjoy it:


The cars grouping at Lonavala



The Gypsy King and the Landrover Defender make an odd but capable pair.



After the Forester joined us we drove into the Tungarli Dam area which looked promising.

GTO in his Classic lead the convoy, being somewhat familiar with the place. A kilometer or so down the road, path turned into rough road, a sign to lockin the wheels (if equipped) and engage the 4X4.



Others folllowed suit.





The place was marked with a few water patches and a lot of area gone dry. We could see the wet mud and slush . Possibly a river feeding it had gone dry

We stop at a spot to chalk out the route.




GTO gets going (see the dam wall in the background) and plunges in the incline to check out if the slush is really that wet...




...and sails through. No problem for others, he had already made a path.

This trip has earned full marks for the Forester. I will look at all Foresters with an upgraded respect in the future. A special mention about 4Wdrifter, the owner, who has the heart to take his Forester to places they were meant to be taken. I wonder how many 4X4 owners actually even engage their low gears.

To all of you who participated in the OTR on Sunday, bravo! From the pics it sure looks like all of you had a blast of a time along with some serious offroading. Keep the pics coming if you have more of them.

Would love to join you people on your next OTR trip. I dont have a 4WD , but would love to accompany you all in my Bolero. Will get my camera along and take as many pics I can and to experience the thrill of what an OTR really is.

If you dont mind a non 4WD person tagging along, please keep me posted.

A petrol of the same car having more torque than the diesel? That's more an exception than the norm. What rpm is max torque achieved at in each?

Likewise. I did a lot of contemplating between the OTR and the supercar rally. Well, rather be a part of the action than just watch. And our OTRs are only getting more interesting with more and more people joining in!

I'd say RIGHT DECISION. Getting stuck is fun. What I like about our OTRs is, we rarely think twice before attacking an obstacle. The 10 second discussions + quick analysis almost always end in a "Let's do it"!

Gogi missed a small technicality here : The Gypsy King was his SAVIOUR here. Until then, he was riding, cramped, in the back mother-in-law seat of my Jeep. I am sure he was dreading going all the way to Lonavla that way. You could notice the sparkle in his eyes upon seeing the Gypsy's front seat empty!

I took the doors off for this OTR as it enables one to see exactly where the tyre is planted, traction etc. Even though we missed the air-con at certain points, this is really the way to offroad.
