Petrol Engines

Hi Guys,

For people who are coming down for TPC2009 with 4WDs with Petrol Engines.

We would suggest the following upgrades.

1) Cooling System - By design the petrol engines are expected to run at a cooler temperature (60-70 Degrees C) than diesel (80-90 Degrees C) engines, to ensure that the engine cools down sufficiently to operating temperatures.
i) Remove the thermostat for the event.
ii) Pressurized Cooling System (4-6 Psi) with Over flow Tank.
iii) Heavier Radiator
iv) Push fan in front of the Radiator.

2) Ignition System -
i) The Distributor must be covered with a Industrial Grade Rubber/Nylon Glove which can take 70-100 Degrees Centigrade.
ii) Heavy Duty Ignition Coil/ Racing Type Ignition Coil.

3) Important Spares & Kit -
i) Can of WD40 or equivalent
ii) Silicone Gasket Maker
iii) A Plastic Sheet which can cover the Radiator Grille & Bonnet while fording/water obstacles.
iv) Spare Air-Filter Element or OEM Air Filter as a back up.

Regards,

Arka

PS - Please add to the list.

Sorry for a late post but I just wanted to mention.

AutoCraze, Since you have the experience of the NIOC events, it would be best to experience the TPC event to see if it matchs or not to other events.

I am just saying, maybe you are right.

But its only fair to judge and make such statement with the actual experience of those 2+ days on the river bed in the TN heat.

Unfortunately your tone does not suggest that.

From what I know, even TPC has strong involvement from Jeep Thrills.
I doubt that the intensity of an OTR would differ greatly within such a group just between North and South India?

You got #6 right....the website says "Whiners stay away".
No offense to anyone, nor is this directed at anyone, but I think that its quite apt. Taking the Challenge with mere words, is ... well nothing but whining.

Question To Organizers>
Ohh Oh! forgot to ask. If I happen to find a OTR worthy jeep by then. (http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-ve...540-550-a.html)

Would a Newbie be able to participate in atleast some of the events?

This might be a stupid question.

I've read that 2 guys / vehicle.
For guys who just want to watch the event (read who does't have a 4x4)
Is it possible ?

My Zen will not be able to follow.
Still I was wondering if I could tag along and learn a few "off-roading" tips.

The only option is to tag along with one of the participants! or organisers!

Please dont get me wrong!

Yup, but Volunteers need to understand offroading and should have the basic knowledge in handling a 4wd vehicle!

Volunteers get to drive? I thought it was more push and shove.

What do the marshals do?

Volunteers for TPC2009

We need volunteers to help us run and document the event. They are expected to meet the following criteria:
  1. Be physically fit to sustain 2 days in the sun
  2. Valid driver’s license.
  3. Prior 4WD experience.
  4. Preferably from Chennai.
Volunteers are expected to help in the following tasks:
  1. Help in recce.
  2. Help in organizing the event.
  3. Man the Special Stages.
  4. Photograph and document the event.
The Organizers will have 4-7 vehicles among them, and they will we be scoring the Special Stages and taking photographs/videos.

Also they will have to frog leap along the course to man various Special Stages.

The Organizers will have a very tough time in the sun, and maybe not get to drive at all.

Regards,

Arka

Hello BHPians,
Iam sorry for raising my views a bit late, I was held up with work.
'The Palar Challenge Is only for Sissies' I totally
1. If, it was a single day event and not 3 grueling days
2. If, we were not held up tight by the so called ‘Environmentally friendly, safety, team spirit,no alcohol etc’ set of rules.
3. If, it was held in an ambient temperature of 8 to 18 degrees
4. If, there were climbs of 10 or 12 feet instead of 30 – 40 feet
5. If, the climbs were of less gradient instead of near vertical ones
6. If, there was a shower and the sand was a little bit hard, instead of being too soft and sinking the broad deflated tires the moment we get in and forcing us to switch to 4X4 from the moment we enter the site, till the end in the evening, without even giving us a minute to have a kushy drive
7. If, we do not get dehydrated before noon and get a throbbing headache if we don’t hydrate ourselves enough
8. If, the dehydration and headache does not make us both mentally and physically fatigued
9. If, we have a 50 mtr run up to make a 10 – 20 feet climb instead of 5 – 10 mtrs
10. If, travelling from one stage of the competition to the other itself, was not a off road challenge
11. If our radiators don’t let us down in cooling the engine and keep the temperature below 100 degrees
12. If, the water crossings didn’t need a good vehicle preparation and a much better than average driving skills to wade through them
13. If, we had a good 200 or more Bhp under the hood.
14. If we had shift in the fly 4X4 / LSD /ABS/ EBD /ABCD in our latest SWB offroader instead of the age old WWII models
15. If, we had a AC cabin
16. If, our vehicle are the ‘off the shelf’, no maintenance latest generation vehicles instead of the Old horse which has to be pampered and spent 100s of hours in getting the fellow up on his feet and make it to ‘ Just rule the terrain’
17. If somebody else could slog their brains and guts out in organizing a 3 day event for a fussy group of crazy guys { Including me } with A/C accommodation, great food, post trail booze, clean and neat star style toilets, planned program with military precision, ability to tackle any sudden situations with ease etc
18. If, somebody could sponsor me and a vehicle to the Dakar or the Rain forest challenge instead of myself spending valuable time/money/energy in preparing and participating in TPC
THE LIST GOES ONNN…
If all these ‘If’s are present , then, as I said before “The Palar Challenge Is only for Sissies”. But, the sad thing is, its not.Whether TPC is the toughest or not, is totally not my concern at all, but, it certainly taught me a lot of points in driving skills, mechanicals , safety in off roading, patience, ability to work as a group with good team spirit etc etc besides the most important thing… ‘Getting me a hell a lot of good friends’.
So, in spite of all these pit falls, I think, I will make it again, to one of the ‘Most wonderful off road experience’ ……. TPC.

Wow Dr.Jones,

Seems you took nearly a week to get your thoughts about TPC together.
A very nice list indeed.
Have fun.

LOL Autocraze: Not everybody lives on TBHP every moment.

And as you had come down pretty strongly on the event without understanding much of it, its obvious that the people who participated get back!

Its your turn to have fun now:
