Naveen,

I have driven Rahul's Gurkha at one of the OTRs, It is a very capable machine. Rahul needs a little more experience in Offroad driving to drive it to the full potential. I have done one or 2 obstracles on it where the 550 and my 540 were being pushed. Gurkha did it with ease.

You would agree everytime you go offroad you learn soemthing new. Last time after one and half yr of regular offroad driving I picked up a new skill of maintianing traction on extreme climbs and slush. Which realy helped in the extreme climb situation. I was able to do a climb where I was getting stuck on reaching the top. Thanks to Pushkin and RBji.

Most of the time the skill of the driver counts. The vechile we drive are very capable on extreme conditions.

The Soft Roaders, well they are made to be pseudo - Offroaders. Guys who want to put them to extreme conditons can do that and try there potential at there own cost and risks. They do surprise at time like the Safari did on the Manesar track. The Pajero did a particular climb with ease where Ankit's Gypsy struggled.

It is true that the Jeep needs to got to the Mechanic for some adjustments and denting after every couple of OTR but it does not cost 5000. as mentioned. Repair of Jeeps is very cheap. Unless untill it has gone through what my Jeep went through in the past 2 Recces, the repairs are just minor adjustments and denting of the mudgards, bumpers as the get riped off or deformed every OTR. These are minor costs not more than a couple of Hundred rupees.

Man !! I love these crazy OTRs. The Harder the better. Missed this one though.

PS: Naveen you failed in your attempt while crossing slush was because you were driving with hand brakes ON, Laxman later pointed out this to me!
High prices as for the price of one Gurkha we can put together almost 4 MM550's.

Rahul,..if anyone has learnt as much by self tutorials,..it is you. Apart from the slush pit where it was a conflict of theories (down right torque/traction vs. moementum). You kept pace with the best at NIOC.
Apart from the front and rear diff.locks,..I can state with confidance that you have deployed all available power and off-roading prowess of the Gurkha. May I suggest that for the next OTR you spend some time driving a MM550 extensively. I am sure Harjeev would be more than glad to do the course in AC comfort !! I suggest Harjeev's 550 as his engine is the most silent and refined of all 550's at NIOC. This will help you understand how different or similar the two drive trains and vehicle dynamics are,..all the while priming your understanding of terrain and driving style.

With regards to why I stalled in the middle of the slush pit !!
I have no words,... as I had cleared the same depth twice earlier!

p.s the amount of clay we were playing with,...nothing less than agressive Mud Tread or NDMS will do,...the fancy shmancy tyres turn into racing slicks at the very sight of slush !!

I am sure you never meant "Soft-roaders" term for Pajero!

Manesar track is soft roader friendly, thats why Roshun and me were able to navigate all the obstacles. But the quarry track where night OTR took place is scary. So many thorny bushes and rocks all around.

Rahul,...lets put it this way.
  • The 3 door SWB Pajero is THE real off-roader.
  • The 5 door LWB Pajero is a good SUV.

Rahul, I agree Pajero is a very capable vechile. But again would you like to put the pajero through the beating we put our MM to and u put your Gurkha to.

I have my serious doubts on CRVs, Captivas, Tuson, GVs even Safari, Scorpio etc capability to put them through harsh terrain.

Though have seen the Scorpio and Safari perform they are quite good. But again Will I put my Scorpio through the torture we put our MMs to ? No.

Amit

Guys,
Can we have some more pics of this event? There has been quite an amount of discussion about the sevearity of terrain. Iam eager to see the degree of difficulty which soft-roaders could not clear. Pics guys...pics

I guess not many here would even put the Gurkha through that stretch but there are many crazy people out there In fact at times even I start thinking of buying a MM550 or something like that.

I personally feel Pajero is a legend and has conquered many terrains. Most probably had we been in US or some other place we would not be looking at Mahindra where Pajero or Toyota 4wds wont be this costly and spares not an issue.

Ah in that picture there is Laxman teaching me 61 - 62 and Gurkha came out!

Wonderful pics!! You guys had some good mudsling exercise. Where are the pics of GV getting stuck? This muddy section i think even Grand Vitara could do and get stuck like all others.

Now guys tell me did you notice any difference between tyre threads performing in this section in the same weight class? Or was momentum the key word? I guess its the later which will be the key in particular section.
