@033: Some NIOC members - Ashish, Bobby etc. - were there. Most I guess stayed away as this was more for SUV's and was never intended to be a "tough" outing. Yes the roll did take place in the easiest part of the outing (after they had already done this on the way in). It was easy enough to straighten it using straps and another vehicle.

The head, middle and tail plus two more vehicles were in radio contact all though the event (although almost everywhere mobiles worked too) helping us keep tabs on convoy. And the tail had winch and a recovery mechanic.

Hope to bring in more about further SUV Xplorations.

How to judge a slush trap? The smallish slush trap in the way was enough to make the vehicles swish and slid in a mjor way. See the tracks in the picture below. Question: if you were alone on a trail how will you judge if an obstacle should be attempted or circumvented?

It heavily depends on the tyres Sudev. I wouldn't think twice about the above slush in an AT tyre. But with HT tyre, I wouldn't try it if I am alone. I have seen how GV with HT tyre was defeated in slush while the CJ340 with AT tyre makes short work of it.

Also, one needs to maintain momentum. Parking on slush is not a good idea.

Hi Sudev

Clicked the link. Was asked to download Sdobe Flash player to view the video. Did it three times but still I am asked to download flash player

Has anyone had any difficulty in viewing the video ?

@GRV: Usually you need to restart the browser (or at worst te computer) to get flash working.

Sudev I would say that most slush is very unpredictible. Unless you have specific offroad tires, expect your vehicle to swish & slide in wet slush even on AT tires. It gets worse with wet grass on slush. Good traction can only happen with proper mud cross or slush/offroad specific tires.

Nevertheless, if your vehicle has got grunt and the right gear & steering input can see you through some tricky slush on HT tires too if they have decent tread left on them.
The track in question in the pic below is a no brainer to me. IMHO it can be negotiated with normal HT tires when full wet with some effort. But if the track is too deep you might just beach you GV.

I would say that the first thing would be to try and judge if your vehicle has sufficient GC to negotiate the obstacle without getting beached. Then, terrain permitting, decide if you would want to plough through it on LOW or fly through it on a HI-LOW gear. Steering and acceleration input are crucial to prevent and/or control a slide. I will be unable to articulate in words how this is done.

Hi Sudev,

Well as the other have said the tyres do make a difference in slush. The HT are the worst for it.

The slush pic is kid stuff to negotiate. The only thing you had to do was keep one side of the vehicle on the side towards the grass for traction. Anyway if you would have crossed it in the mid also would have cleared with a little sway.

The fun in slush is the sway, getting stuck and being retrieved. ;o)

You have try to maintain traction in tyres in slush.

The next OTR you have I will try to be there. My Jeep is in denting and painting. I think should get it by the end of next week.

Experience, expertise, ability ( Vehicle / Driver ) common sense and judgement.

Even tractor tyres will get a 4x4 suv stuck if driven carelessly while a smart driver can get a vehicle through this slush with most tyres, even highway tyres

If ever a vehicle is stopped on such slush, start slowly in 2nd gear, 4 H.

Trail Blazing #4 on 20th November.

All participants are to bring their own tents, sleeping bags and staying paraphernalia. There would be a small service charge for liquids and utilities per head.

Every one gets food for them selves plus some more.
Program:

November 20
Assemble at DLF Golf Club, Gurgaon @1500hrs
Convoy to site
Setup camp @1800hrs
Star Gazing @2200hrs

November 21
Subha Ki Chai @0700hrs
Morning trail blazing @0800hrs
Convoy Back @1200hrs
Disburse @1300hrs
