Sunday the 13th the day of the OTR. The team had gathered by about 9 am and were waiting for the flag off. All were busy checking their machines and stickering them. The weather was nice and sunny with a nip in the wind. The temperature on the previous day would have been sub 15 degrees C. There was slight drizzle and lots of fog on the 12th night. But this morning seemed pleasent and sunny!

The start of the OTR. Initial few KMs was an OK drive except for a mud field. An MM 540 got stuck in that. Once it was pulled out we moved further on the trail.

Then we reached a steep rocky hill with loose sand/gravel in between. The climb was very steep and long enough to make a few of the machines run out of breath. The change of directions in between caused more agony / pleasure.

By the time we crossed this steep hill and moved on, the fog had started building up. It became more cold and I suspect there was quite a bit of humidity / dew in the air. The terrain changed drastically. We were climbing up slushy hills. The dew in the air made it difficult even to stand in some places. The hill side that we were climbing had deep crevasses made by running rain water, presumably from the last rains. This made it very tough as the vehicles were sliding in the slush into these crevasses.

Is that OFFICIAL KLP 806 '06'# jeep a CJ2A? or a CJ3A? Superbly restored.

Great Trail... great pics. Rajesh, you did not go in your 540, would have been a great OTR. Whose Jeep you rode in?

Going by the windscreen frame alone its a CJ3A, but to confirm the car as a genuine 3A I guess we'd need to study the other details. There's a nice page on the web which details all the differences at http://www.cj3a.info/cj3a/cj2acj3a.html

Raj, Thanks! Murali's is a great machine. Nice engine and mechanicals are well done up. I had the opportunity to take it to an OTR even before Murali got to see it in this condition

Santosh, I did not take my 540 to Munnar. Instead I drove to Munnar in my Qualis and for the Offroad I took the 540 which we bought for Murali. This was getting done up in Kerala and hence requested my friends to get it to Munnar for the OTR, an opportunity to test and fine tune it too..

Santosh, DKG, The KLP jeep is an 1952 low bonnet model (not sure of the series). Belongs to a friend of mine, Prakash. When he bought it it had an international engine and a 3 speed gear box. Now it had a Peugeot engine + 4 speed transmission. Yes, it is superbly done up and is a very capable offroader.

Continuing with the OTR - after we crossed this place, we waited to regroup and had our lunch, biriyani for a change (Biriyani is a luxuary in an OTR ). During this phase we had a couple of breakdowns and those vehicles had to be towed up some nasty (pls read nice) terrain. By this time the fog had become permanent and we had some rain too. This paved the way for the last trecherous part..Here are some more photos before the last part.
