Very quickly....because I have a flight to catch in a couple of hours

Met up with the Chennai crew - arka, vikram, bala, deep, ram, doc jones, ali and many more! Great to put faces to the names.

For the Mumbai crew - this is a totally different terrain from what we usually come across in Mumbai. It is just sand...sand and more sand that gets in your hair, on your skin, in your clothes and starts to chafe. Difficult to build momentum because you are doing quite a bit just to stay moving on this surface that just wants to suck you in. And then you have the obstacles to deal with. Being a river bed the obstacles are fantastic. In MH we have rocky river beds but here it is coarse sand...and fine sand depending on where you put your wheels.

I think the secret is to use the right tires, add lightness and not too much torque. Aggressive pattern tires fared poorly and fanta had a hard time getting around with the mudzillas compared to the CJ500D with the NDMS that were too narrow for the terrain. Carb gypsies need to be tuned so they don't cut out fuel over long inclined runs.

If there is a strong wind...the sand mixes in and acts like a sandblaster so better to have a vehice with a canopy or wear protective clothing. We lucked out because it rained and the top layer got weighted down.

First the 500D broke down with a broken radiator fan...then Doc Jones' battery took out his radiator fan AND damaged itself in the process and finally someone's engine broke free of the mounts and took out the radiator fan and the radiator as well. 3 casualties in under 3 hours of OTR. They were all eventually moved out of the terrain thanks to Arka and team's practices recovery techniques.

This event is a car-breaker...no other way to put it. You have to be alert at all times because the sand IS shifting and if you cannot see the drop ahead of you in time - it could be 5 feet...it could be 30 feet.

I am impressed...TPC 2010 is going to be a stonker!

EDIT: The Gurkha had a relatively easy time running around this terrain compared to some of the other cars. Mohan...you listening?

Hi GS & Doc.Mohan,

MonsterBHP (Karthick)Used every trick in the book, and was flying in and out of the obstacles.

The Vehicle is good, and an experienced driver brings the best out of it.

Regards,

Arka

PS - Mumbai Gang, Please send MonsterBHP a personal invite, he wants to do some crazy wtare fording and mud-bogging.

LOL Gs, the event is a vehicle breaker no doubt about it. Some of us are crazy to keep going back to it year after year after breaking our vehicles..

The problem with fanta was not necessarily the tires IMO. I needed to understand the vehicle first and then it was a breeze!!

Recce#4 (06-06-10)

Hi Guys,

We had a short recce, with a few casualties which again Highlighted the importance of the SPIKE-ARRESTOR. (in compression and tension).

And as usual the preparation necessary to make the vehicle PALAR worthy.

Last time it was the Gypsy's this time it was the Gurkha, with Karthick behind the wheels, putting the Force behind the Gurkha.

Regards,

Arka

Back to an OTR after a month. Missed out the last OTR so did not want to miss this one also.

Overall a very cool OTR. The weather was at its best covering the sun at max and to add icing to the fun we had a nice blast of rain at the end.

Will start posting the pics as and when I find time amidst work. Please bare with me.

But when it did come out, it made up by its sheer power !

OT: Allan, we will discuss a project when you are here..

This recce was total fun . The weather was simply brilliant and enjoyed the rain every bit.
Still have a very long way to go in offroading and understanding my vehicle.

@ Vikram : I sense something happening ! lol .
