Report Part 2

Day 1 - Jan 24:

Driving through the trail and queued up for the first obstacle.

Not so Live Report: Bangalore Annual OTR, Avalakondu 24-25 Jan 2010!-otr-jan2010-065.jpg

Little after entering the Trail we reached the first obstacle which was a simple climb.
Slot in Low - 2nd gear and just roll up. Marshals doing their spotting to perfection.

Next obstacle had a pretty tough solid rock climb straight ahead (dont have a clear photo of this monster) or for long chassis vehicles a detour to the left (which also had its share of difficulties).

Go straight ahead and place your wheels at the wrong line or angle and this is what would happen. Many offroaders got stuck this way that morning.
None like the Gypsy though. Sat plum on the rear Pumpkin.

It had to be winched out by the Mahindra team who were close by.
IIRC the MM550 cut his side wall on this particular obstacle.

After seeing all this I wanted to take the LWB detour and told the marshals I wanted to go left. Many laughed and I had no qualms about putting my rookie tail in between and running off to the left.

Arka, Vikram and Vinod all from chennai would have none of that. Arka said 'Why? You are going to go straight and we are going to make you get over it'
<Gulp> Okay!

So I listed to the spotters pointed at the right angle after backing up a bit and went towards the rock face. More than halfway over it, I feel it might not make it and pump the throttle too much and the wheels spin. Arka says to let go, I immediately let go and am stationary at an incline looking at the sky. I hear someone say "90% done just walk over it" Think it was Vinod Nookala. Thanks to who ever that was.

I just use the torque to walk over it. Well that did the trick and I was thrilled that I did what many tried over and over and failed at. I hear applauds for getting over it in 1 try.(any one have a video of this, PLEASE share?)

What I learned that very moment is:
  • Listen and watch your spotter.
  • Trust the power and torque of your vehicle.
  • Choose the right gear.
  • Know where your pumkins are placed.
  • Choose the right angle to approach the obstacle.
  • Know when to pump the gas and when not to.
  • Listen and watch your spotter. (yes point repeated to stress on its importance)
Many chose not to listen to the spotters as they are 'experienced'. This only angered the spotters and wasted time as the vehicles did get stuck most of the time.

Offroaders should learn to leave their pride and other excess baggage at home and trust other seasoned offroaders who can see the obstacles more clearly from the outside.

And if you took the left at this obstacle junction this might happen to you.

After this was another short climb.

Some big boys waiting for their turn.

The view on top all round was this ...

Not so Live Report: Bangalore Annual OTR, Avalakondu 24-25 Jan 2010!-otr-jan2010-126.jpg

Mr Behram passed by while walking up the trail. Some of us caught him for the usual mandatory Thar questions.

Further down Patrick's Landcruiser got stuck but got itself out of the situation by brilliantly winching itself out of the ditch.

This is why I dont have a Side step

Not so Live Report: Bangalore Annual OTR, Avalakondu 24-25 Jan 2010!-otr-jan2010-134.jpg

What followed was not only breath taking in terms of nature's beauty but also in terms of offroading. <Gulp> A steep downhill on the rock face with huge boulders to negotiate around or over.

Again:
  • Listen and watch your spotter.
  • Trust the power and torque of your vehicle.
  • Choose the right gear.
All I did was slot to 1st took my feet off all the pedals to roll down the rock face. Gentle dabs on the brake just towards the end.

Was I enjoying the moment and that day? Most definitely!

We parked here for a very late lunch. Did I care ? not at all.

More to come... Am I wasting your time ?

It was a great event enjoyed by all.

Its a real shame that such a great event has ended in shortage of funds due to few who came in un-announced. People who joined the event unregistered should come forward and pay their share, i am sure they enjoyed the event too.

Else, organizers please let us know and we all shall pool in the required bit.

This was India’s biggest off-road event, cheers to everyone who came and participated and hats off for the organizing team.

And I am sure that next year we can see more jeepers.

All the best for 2011 and we expect even more challenging terrain

Cheers,

As the pictures are coming in...Yes it was definitely a tough and testing track for both, driver and their machines.
Good, very good OTR, esp.with the bonfire solids and liquids.

nice job

nice pictures and good write-ups. This sure shows that Off-Roading has matured a lot in India. I can see a lot of wonderful machines and lot of followers,. Probably in the coming OTRs we will see highly customized rock crawlers.

Yes , as it has been said this has been a very big event and a very successful one and i am glad that i was a small part of the team that pulled it off.

The credit for that goes to dwarak, suresh, vinay, vivek and giri.

Initially, i was skeptical and so was shahnawaz and swastikviji if managing 50+ vehicles and 100+ people was possible. but hey, i think we did a decent job.

kudos to dwarak , one of the most enthusiatic off roaders, the crowd puller. his enthusiasm is contagious. keep it going sir.

mr sreenivas mp , we cant thank him enough for his invaluable efforts.

I can say for sure , actually vouch for it , that everybody who came and participated did have a great time and it is quiet evident from the posts here. Minor glitches if any ,will be definitely sorted out by the seniors in the forthcoming events for sure.

It was a pleasure meeting the chennai jeepers especially arka.
This man arka is a one man riot!

couldnt interact much with the hyd jeepers as there were in group 2. It was nice meeting DKG.

since the chennai jeepers were in group 3, the group i was tail sweeping , i got a chance to see how arca and his gang of jeepers operate and handle our terrain.

special thanks to vijay reddy(star aqua/german). i was able to do this trail in his jeep, gave me a chance to sharpen my jeep driving skills. The jeep perfomred very well on the trail.

Also , i would like to publicly apologise to star aqua for breaking his snorkel head. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW MR REDDY? will TRY not break anymore things on your baby

@starter:anytime man, good that you finally brought the gypsy on the trail.
@laluks: thanks for the kind words.

and guys , what happened to that willys mb fanatic on day 2? lol.
