Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games

With Kerry Packer's landmark slogan for night cricket as the background, let me start off the with 4 images from a night in the trails around Lonavala, where we had an awesome show of drives, four x fours, short cuts, and lots of runs.

But first, turn off the flood lights, wear your xray glasses, imagine screams of joy, madness and encouragement and let your imagination loose with these long exposures of the super sixer of the day...

A Gurkha and a Gypsy on an island

A Gurkha going into a lake (after a point the lights went under and then some part of the windscreen)

Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games-gurkhawater.jpg

A Gurkha emerging from a lake (I was too excited running to bother about camera shake)

Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games-gurkaemerges.jpg

Introducing Arnold schwarzenegger's younger brother (Dr Mohan) as the driver
who decided to give a bath to the Gurkha to clean up after the mud spa face treatment

In the background is the dentist with the golden gloves (Dr Tejas) who is very good at attaching D shackes and yanking be it a human or an auto!

More pics to come...

Flying Ibrahim of Sawarsai mountain conquest fame, who also got renamed as crawling Ibrahim (long story) and swimming Ibrahim but whose real handle should be Fearless Ibrahim

Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games-ibrahimportrait.jpg

Mc Mathew owner of the Rainmaker's shack in Lonavala. Who brought along his own unique style. Imagine music playing in the middle of nowhere as everyone crawled in the mud attaching tow ropes. Probably the only man I know with speakers in his breasts!(Another long story) But for him we would not have been on the trails we went to. Thanks!

Paras and Ibrahim's cousin/friend. Paras is masked so that his friends on the modifications forum which he frequents, dont recognize him hanging with the 4x4 guys

Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games-parasportrait.jpg

And last but not the least, Sachin, who accompanied Dr Mohan and stood steadfast and cool headed in many situations, scouting the terrain and splashing through the slush to shove boulders et all. Amazing guy. Want one of him for every OTR.

Also in tow was Jr Mohan: Sarvesh, who his dad is starting off real young!

Then there was me, who Paras identified as..."Ah. Genesis, you are the photo guy". Hope that is a good way to be remembered.

Of course this post will not be complete without the real stars

I was trying out a new tripod I bought recently, so they were not accidental. But the last one (with the splashing water) which is probably the best is a fluke mostly caused by the movement of my jaw dropping to the floor as I watched the Gurkha go down under.

The night was dark as Genesis said, the sky was lit by a half moon but our spirits were soaring and enthusiasm overflowing.

I was to test my Nissan Patrol but eventually I got my Gurkha.
Matthew's shack was stimulating and the Stuffed Chicken Omelette was a treat.

The trail was hilarious ,sinister, tortuous and was packed with great action.

There were 2 hair-raising moments for me:-

1) Me and Ibrahim's Gypsy crossed a lake and then Tejas and Ibrahim coaxed me into putting the Gurkha through deeper water. I did decide to check it out.
At one point the lake became suddenly deep and the water came right upto 1/3d of the windscreen,at that point I was to back up,but something kept telling me to move on,albeit strongly enough,so I continued. After wading 30 feet distance with water,I gradually came up and was back on the bank. The entire few minutes were breath taking and I had never been so focussed in my life as in those few moments.
Once back on terra firma I was told that every one had tense moments during this journey.

2) The second hair raiser was a loud explosion not just a sound but a flash and a mini cloud of smoke from Tejas's left front tire. As I was tail-ending him I was the only one who saw what happened. We all gathered around Tejas's Classic and Ibrahim was very quick to report that the entire area smelled of Sulfur Nitrous, meaning that Tejas either had gone over an explosive left behind or we had been shot at by someone. The latter possibility was discredited because we heard no gunfire. Fortunately the Classic had no residual damage.

I really loved every inch of this trip ,especially getting "stuck in muck" scenario, where my Gurkha was stuck Chassis level.
I was towed once and I towed twice, Matthew's Classic and Ibrahim's gypsy.

Fun Indeed...
Soumya is a die-hard photographer, muck, dust, water and the night couldn't hold him.
Hats off to Soumya(Genesis).

Wow, a night OTR with all the essential elements thrown in. Cool. Also, it is great that you folks are finding new trails as that also is a must over time.

Keep the pictures & report rolling.

The pleasure of smooth tarmac soon changed to joy of rough tracks as we bounced around and crept past sleeping villages into a grassy terrain.

Big Boys Play At Night - The Lonavala Games-grasroots.jpg

The first obstacle (a trench) seemed innocuous enough as Flying Ibrahim flew past it in his gypsy, leaving Tejas to go in next.
And here is what happened.

No problem!

Different problem!

And after Tejas was towed out, we spent the next 20 minutes figuring out multiple ways to unscrew out the D shackle which had jammed its way behind the Gypsy's bumper.

Glad to have his bumper impact, Ibrahim then flew off to find something more problematic and found some slush to play in.

His search for 'challenging' terrain was satisfied in a particular patch where he got well and truly stuck despite multiple rocking moves

Putting stones underneath the wheels

And finally had to be towed out

While wearing the badge of honor valiantly

Mission accomplished, it was time to get the black classic which had tried a
stunt of approaching on a different path onto the other side but that too
needed a tow rope to snatch it free from the rocks which dug into
the underside and held it immobile

The Gurkha had a easy crossing and after that it was time to drive back on the trail, to another spot, which really did not have much to offer other than a deafening explosion which Mohan documented earlier in his post.

Of all the people I think Tejas was the happiest after the explosion since his fear that an expensive engine part had probably busted went unfounded and he would not have to replace his water pump for the 3rd time in a row

I for one am happy to have two legs since the explosion happened right under the left front wheel where I was riding shotgun.

So we drove another 30 minutes and reached a spot next to a lake at around 3 am and decided to churn some thick gooey chocolate...
