I am new to dedicated GPS devices, so could you please explain me the concept behind GEOCACHING? I have read wiki but it says it is a game??

mercedised, most handhelds cannot run other software.
The GPS thread in shifting gears(gadgets section) has a lot of information about various GPS devices.
You can post your device details there and get info.

I used Garmin 62s & 78s during car rallies, I found them quite useful for offroading in desert as well hilly terrain. The best combination for offroading is to have Garmin Birdseye subscription along with these unit.
In bird's eye you can download the high resolution satellite imagery of any area and send it to Garmin device with just a click of a mouse.

Firstly thank you for this informative log, just like all your travel logs very informative and readable. I have purchased a MMI device and its not even accurate on state highways, recently i was on SH from Chickmagalur to Kadur and the display showed me moving on a green background with no sign of any road, I did appear to intersect and then move away from the road I was on as per the GPS, was very disconcerting and my trust in the maps loaded on the device was badly dented. Looked like the road was not tracked properly on the MMI maps. Can anyone tell me, is there any way I can load tracks on this device that are not available with the service provider?

manmohanman, I do not think MMI devices and software support reading gpx tracks. If you can go to your device software, and click on "about me" or similar button, it will tell you which software its using. Based on that I can let you know whether the ability to show a GPX track is possible in the software or not.

If its not, then the second best option for you is to unlock your device, and use MMI software for normal driving, and when you go to areas without maps, you can use some other software for showing tracks.

I suggest you check out the oruxmaps latest beta. They have added a "Backtrack" option in tracks, so with a single click you can backtrack your route.
Really beneficial in OTRs when you are doing hit and trial to reach a destination.

My Nokia 5235 map is self learning type.

On a new unknown road if you travel with the GPS positioning On, next time the map will show this as a road.

I remember many such routes ( now showing as roads in map) during my vehicle performance trials.

This is/ will become the definitive thread on GPS use on TBhp. As such, I think a more elaborate explanation on vector vs raster maps, moving maps, positional awareness/ navigating/ routing would be in order. Also a bit on how GPS works, esp. on how weak the signals are, the need for the ephemeral table and its relationship with A-GPS, would also be useful.

Thats not a good idea when offroading. Often on many terrains you would backtrack quite a bit. So imagine you going to that region again, and seeing a maze of tracks, without any idea which was the perfect track to take.

I was thinking of that, but then I refrained. It will make this article lose focus. About technical definitions, and A-GPS details etc., lot of information on google as well in the generic GPS thread in gadgets section. I want this article to be focused on Offroad GPS use.
