It was the usual fun in the sun, the monsoons have altered the terrain quite a bit, making it a grueling drive.

Senthil, Ranjit and Vikram were there with their Gypsy's.

We met up with Dr. Jones in his Prowler after a long time.

Goutam and Siddharth joined us as photographers.

Unlike many other south and north events, this looks surprisingly SUV friendly. No bushes or rocks to damage vehicles, and it appears that more powerful vehicles will have an advantage here?
Or is it just that the rocky and shrub sections are not there in pictures?

Hi TSK,

Most of the Climbs are on Gravel/Shale/Shingle Tracks used by Sand Quarrying Trucks, the debris can scrape the plastic very badly.

Aligning the vehicle for a climb and gaining momentum, exiting the climb and realigning requires a nimble vehicle, SUVs, lose out on this account.

Also the Climbs/Obstacles/SS continuously test the vehicle's ADR Angles, this is where the SUVs suffer.

Considering a 2Ton Plus SUVs generating 100Plus BHP, the Power to weight is similar to a JEEP and considerably lower than the Gypsy's.

The real advantage being torque, which alone does not help an SUVs in these conditions.

However on the relatively flat sections between Obstacles/SS, the SUVs can move faster.

There are not many Shrubby Sections and they are avoided.

Hi Arka,

Seems Like the Gypsy is a preferred weapon for the Palar, I remember in 2009 only headers & I were the underdogs slogging the old 1.3 liters.

Good Luck with this year's event. Will be missing my Palar Buddies, and the Tricky Palar sand bed.

The gypsy has its advantages as well as the disadvantages Sean - remember the bumper / radiator fan incident wherein your co-driver had to pull with a rope
