Frankenstein, if you have pics of these models with distinguishing features, please post. This would help members distinguish / make out them from others.

Brilliant Thread. Glad to be glued right from the start. Subscribed.

Would it be possible to link up the best known combinations for various vehicles? For e.g. X engine + Y gb + Z axles + etc =

Matador 305 + T90 + 4.88 IS good for the CJ3B

ISUZU G1+ ISUZU 4 SPEED + 4.88 works well with the CJ3A & 3B.

Qualis engine + gypsy GB + 4.88 for the CJ3B

ISUZU 4FC1 + KMT 90 + 4.88 for the ford GPW

Nissan bd30 + isuzu 5 speed GB+ 4.88 for the mm550, CJ6.

scphanse , thanks , most of the engines mentioned were seen , driven by me in Hyderabad.

Santosh the 407 engine was in a commander with KMT90 +4.27 crown pinion and it was a TAXI . I did drive this Jeep , good low end torque but too heavy and the front used to bottom out easily .

Hi,
Any chance of adding the weights of these engines and gearboxes?

Sandeep, it would be great if you could post the weights of the engines. Ultimately power to weight matters

great initiative ! With so many people restoring Jeeps across the country such information is invaluable. Thanks for taking the trouble to list it all here. Can turn into a great reference thread

Re: Engine, Gearbox, Diff ratios, axles options for the JEEP

Need expert advice:

My CJ 500Di (1994 model) is under going a gearbox change, replacing the current one with refurbished KMT 90 with T 18 Single lever unit. Was contemplating on changing final drive ratios as well. With this in mind, I want to know the following:

a) does this model come with 5.38 final drive ratio?
b) If no, then can we replace the existing crown & pinion with a 43/8 unit or it requires changing of other parts in differential as well?

Currently i am running on 235/75 R 15 MT tyres. The jeep is primarily used in estate so top end is not a priority but lot of bottom end grunt will definitely help.

Regards,
Darshan

No idea but my guess is it did. You should have a small metal plate connected to the diff pumpkin which usually has the ratio written on it. Am assuming an older jeep like yours would still have the plate

If required, you'll just need to change the crown pinions at the front and rear alone. No other part requires to be changed.
Hey Darshan,

Have tried answering whatever's possible. Hope it helps till the experts chip in.

Dear Frankenstein,

Good initiative. One note though: Please give due credit in your posts to where you have cut paste some of the values from. eg. jeep thrills, etc and the people who have posted it.

Re: Engine, Gearbox, Diff ratios, axles options for the JEEP

Help required..Please
I earnestly request all you jeep guru’s to help me understand, if It is possible and practical to mate a 3 speed gearbox to bolero MDI3200TC engine. I recently bought a Cj3b(2wd) fitted with a B275 and T90 gearbox, fortunately front dana 44 differentials still exists, its only missing the transfer case and front shaft.
I am not much into cruising at high speeds, enjoy slow driving and okay with compromising top end speed if MDI3200TC can be mated with a 3 speed gearbox and a Spicer T18 transfer case.
I am yet to start the rebuild process, as of now shopping for parts and keeping things aside. Once I have all the required things in place will start modifying my jeep.
Thanks,
Deepak Shivanna

Re: Engine, Gearbox, Diff ratios, axles options for the JEEP

IMO you will only need a bellhousing to join MDI3200TC with your GB.

also note that the bolt pattern of t90 matches with KMT90, so if a bellhousing with KMT90 will do the job.

the only task is to check the engine with similar bolt pattern of MDI3200B which uses a KMT90 GB.

IMO the international series engines share the bolt pattern with MDI3200 please verify that. (i am not 100% sure )

arka & spike will be able to answer this question more than any one else.

(as B.D sir are not online.)

rgds,
Nikhil
