tHIS IS CRAZY gUYS

Out of Michellin/BFG/Yokos which is less noisy on road and which has better life for both on and off road?

Basically we have to see which has better performance on all fronts. We can not put only Mud (tractor looking)tyre just because tyreslicks.
We have 4 months of monsoon (atleast here in western ghats) and rest of the time it is no mud but sand,dirt,rocky terrain.
We have to see the condition where we stay. I feel...
So if we do not compare on Mud only then which is better in terms of
1)Life
2)Noise
3)On road
4)Off road (excluding Mud)

Pls suggest.

I will put my money on BF or yokos whichever is cheaper and available in desirable size. Michelin LTX i'm not too convinced about as it is comparitively a new entrant.

Frankly, if you ask me - it makes a lot more sense for you to just buy a set of regular on road tyres for cheap (maybe even used/retreaded) and buy a set of the Mudzilla's for the real action. When you go offroad, just dump those tyres on the back and ride. Fit it on when you reach the destination.

Ofcourse, this makes sense only if you go offroading in a place like munnar - like it happened recently. So it would have made sense to go there on highway slicks and change over during the morning. For local OTR's of a 50 KM range, just run with the mudzilla's and keep your speed to jeep-levels. Should be safe, and should not waste the tyres out too much.

Am getting the rear bench off my 3B and just doing this. I cringe looking at my NDMS running on regular tarmac.

The Michelins are much quieter in comparison to the others. Which is why they charge a premium and get away with it.

Geolanders dont seem too bad (low freq noise), BFs are noiser.

Tyre life - the BFGs go on and on and on. Geos last about 30k on really good roads (road only use - friend of mine uses them on his Pajero which has never been out of tarmac). I dont know about the ATX, but Michelins are generally softer and therefore dont last as long as the rest - the softness ensures that YOU last when there's an emergency, though.

Now I am bit relaxed , i think I will put BFG on my 550. As for off roading noise factor doesnt seem to be big and on road these tyres will not be as noisy as sand grips or truck tyres.

Most if not all offroading challenges in India involve rains, slush and of course mud. Even in Munnar, people were disappointed there was no mud and slush and were begging for rains. If you look at most offroading photos from Mumbai-Pune, they mostly involve mud, and you live around there.

Dear Samurai,

just let me know BFGs are good enough to handle light mud also? I like BFGs and want to put on my 550 . Pls suggest as it should last for some time more and even on road also. Maharashtra is land of forts and we have ample trekking and all types of trrain here but if we have to go there we have a good road network also(golden quadrilateral) etc. so it should last a bit long.

Thanks for confirmaing if BFGs are good enough for this.

One small question. As my purse has become real light after the restoration of CJ340 and since i am in dire need of tyres for it can any one tell me where can I get chineese tyres like the one trammway got in Bangalore. Or is it that we will not get these tyres in Bangalore at all. If its so then I will be forced to drive down to chennai on a weekend.

Guys please help.

After using the Sandgrip for 40,000 kms I will add.

• Sand: Excellent (obvious)
• Rocky Surface - Dry: Very Good
• Rocky Surface - Wet: Good
• Wet Grassy/Hard Damp muddy trail: Good
• Slush: Bad
• Loose gravel/jungle trail - DRY: Very Good
• Loose gravel/jungle trail - Wet: Good

I have taken my MM540XD up to Kanakpura/Muthathi and the nearby off-road Trails and the only problem was in mud/slush.

Most people run the MRF Sand Grip over inflated to get the best out of the tyre.

some suggest Tyre Pressure for the MRF Sand Grip.

Road - 28-35 psi depending on the Wheel Disc.

Sand - 10-15 psi

Rocks -15-20 psi

Trails - 20 psi

After 15-20K kms the tyre is suitable for only Road and Sand use.

+1 to this. Once the egdes of tyre get softened/rounded due to road use they loose their bite. Though I find them equally good on dry rocky terrain as well. Mine are touching the TWI on all four but still grip on dry rocks and sand is very good.
As for slush...Let's change the topic.

Hey, It makes me wonder whats so special about the Yokos that other Good AT tyres cant do?

Any pointers such as the one by ex670C and KS would be helpful.
