Hi,

i had just bought a Jeep 1 week back.
wanted to upgrade the tyers to the ones from safari.
would like to know whats the cost of them in Hyderabad and Bangalore.
i think tyer size is 235/75 15.

the car is in Workshop getting repaired.

getting it painted and full service...

well i haev the jeep in hyderabad...
its been repaired by my Uncle...
will be able to post pics after 24th as i will be in hyd from 21th Sep till 24th Sep...

The original 1947 Willys Jeep would have had 16-inch diameter wheels.
Willys CJ-3B Jeep Universals also came with 15-inch dia. wheels,
but back then both wheel sizes came mounted with narrow 4-ply or 6-ply
second-world-war-style NDMS (Non-Directional Mud & Snow) bias-ply tires.

The Willys (and also the Mahindra) Jeep Universals had a wheel bolt pattern
with five lugs evenly spaced around a 5½-inch circle.

The 16-inch diameter stock rims were 4½-inches wide and the 15-inch diameter stock rims were 5-inches wide. This is too narrow for commonly available modern tires. 6.00-16 and 7.00-15 tires were typical in those days.

A 215-85R16 Dunlop Rover R/T tire would fit, but to the best of my knowledge this radial tire size is not available anywhere in India (except with the Indian Army?).

If you wish to use 15-inch radials, you will first have to change to 15-inch wheels. The stock 15-inch pressed steel rims meant for a Maruti Gypsy, work just fine (the bolt hole circle is the same). Then you can mount 235/70R15 MRF Zigma-GP or equivalent tires.

was also thinking if i fit 265/75 15 will it touch the inside wall of the jeep...

Hi Zulfikar we have just put 275/16's on our Scorpio (needed a bit of trimming of the plastic wheel arches. No detrimental effect to the ride.

Stick to the NDMS pattern of tyres for two reasons
1) Nothing compares to them Off the Road.
2) The JEEPs look best in NDMS in a bigger size i.e 7.00x15 & 7.00x16

Arka, I agree with you that the NDMS tires, do give that good old-fashioned WW-2 Jeep look. It looks fantastic!

But performance-wise, I beg to differ. In the present day there are better options than those Second-World-War NDMS tires, if you're willing to use wider better rims.

And on-road, NDMS tires skid like crazy. The centres of the tires between the lugs are completely bald-slick! They give very poor braking and on a perfectly dry pavement.
I had two near-misses on my MRF 6.00-16 NDMS equipped MM540 DP 4wd.

Finally I changed to 15-inch pressed steel rims meant for a Maruti Gypsy.
And mounted on 235/70R15 MRF Zigma-GP tires.
This was like thirteen years ago.

At the present time, I believe MRF Zigma-GP are no longer made. Somebody please confirm or refute this!

Hello Ram,
You have made a good point abt the NDMS. The newer NDMS made by Birla, Ceat & Goodyear have cleats running parallel to the centre rib, results in much better performance on wet roads.

Like I mentioned OTR there is no Tyre in the Indian Market which can beat it.

MRF Zigma GP is still under production.

Bro, did u give the steering a consideration??
I'd suggest 225 max...beyond that u wont feel like turning the HARDD steering wheel.

Trust me dude..it made no difference, except when we drop the pressure A LOT, the steering tightens up..the damn scorpio's steering is so light, i would say it made it better.
we were on 255/15's earlier and put about 65000km on them!!! gave bald a whole new meaning!!LOL

well the jeep already has the original tyres,
but the point is the jeep does not stop if at high speed...
wanted something with a good grip...

my First Jeep had for 7 years, had 235/75 15 and didnt have any issue with the sterring beeing hard,and could go 100+ without even getting scared...

my 2nd jeep had for 2 months with the original tyres and never did more than 60 on it...

now my 3 jeep and planning to keep it for a LONG time...
its has the original tyres but wanted to go in for the same tyres i had in my old jeep was also thinking about 265/70 R15

SO
wanted to know the price of these tyres.

265/70 15=???

i don't think you will get 265 so easily but instead i'll advice you to put 275/65 ( not sure about the profile).they will look good, here at ludhiana we've got more that 30 jeeps with these ( some even 295). 235 will look too small.
and 275 will cost you around Rs.4500 per tyre.
