Re: Towing Cable vs Towing Belt/Strap

Not the regular question:

Does anyone have failed/snapped towing belts ? Wanted for some 'adjustments' not related to towing

I have a damaged belt that I use for demos of when to discard. However, sending it to you may be more expensive than you buying a new one.

Re: Towing Cable vs Towing Belt/Strap

Can someone share good options/link to purchase recovery strap? I see bunch of them on Amazon but not sure which one would fit my need

Requirements:
- FWD car. Gross Weight ~2100Kg.
- Only to pull car out of tricky situations (loose mud/slush) if front tyres are stuck

Again, not into off roading but just for that peace of mind when travelling.

Re: Towing Cable vs Towing Belt/Strap

Never ever get steel ropes and slings(used to lift by cranes). They transfer unwanted shock to chassis. Get either kinetic rope / straps which has about 20% elasticity and break strength approximately 3-4 times the vehicle.
Please keep in mind snatching a stuck vehicle is a dangerous operation.
If one is not sure of the condition of the tow hooks of the vehicles involved- the stuck & the vehicle which is pulling; fix a basmati rice bag filled with sand (a dead weight) in the middle of the tow rope. If either of the end hooks give away, it is going to fly like a missile and hit the vehicle or even person standing near causing fatality. The dead weight will prevent this.
BTW winching is the safest recovery method.

Hey, I watched the above video you mentioned. From what I understand: Bow shackles are good, d shackles—not so much.

What's your opinion on this product? It comes with two shackles (which has engraving on it). I'm only looking to purchase something for emergencies

While this does seem to come from a reputed brand (at least a brand name), in your shoes, I would prefer to buy such items offline, where I can physically check the equipment before buying. It might end up costing slightly more, but only slightly. Also, the pictures there is no certifying label visible for the strap itself.

Ideally you should look for a paper certificate which is given with both the shackle and the strap. Failing which, at the very least the strap should have a nylon label stitched on the side of one of the loops. (thats the place of least wear and tear)
Looks something like the image attached.

We at Learn Offroad is soon launching a range of premium recovery gear under the brand name Safe Offroad Solutions (SOS Gear). Design for use of off-roaders by off-roaders. Tested and certified by NABL and BIS approved labs. We are currently in the final testing and packaging phase. Should be live in 45 days for sale.

Aren't the dangers mentioned above equally applicable for winching as well?

Buy from a reputed dealer who specializes in 4x4 products rather than from some unknown seller online. Even good dealers who deal with tools and automobile stuff are not very familiar with recovery equipment and hence the need to go to a specialist. Online, Mahindra sells Bushranger-branded products through their m2all portal. A little expensive but you can go for that if there are no 4x4 equipment dealers nearby.

Kinetic recoveries are always more dangerous because of the sudden and violent application of force.
