Generally not much tougher than opening a mineral water bottle. Sometimes it can get tight if you have driven in 4WD on hard tarmac causing some transmission windup. Driving in 4WD on hard tramac puts pressure on the hub locks, and can eventually break it.

Hello everyone,
The gears or the pattern on the shaft or rod on to which the hub locks fit are not the same for the mahindra and gypsy though they look alike from outside. i.e the gypsy hub locks would not fit on the MM540.

Hub Locks are different for Gypsy and Jeep. You can source the hublocks for Gypsy from above mentioned company.

Thanks

Some people do not think Lambda hubs are particularly good quality. Frankly, I do not know. Any opinions? Any alternatives?

A-jay,
Gypsy's came with Japanese made Aisin free wheeling hubs.
Try and source one from an old Gypsy or local workshops.
They are much better built than the Lambda hubs.
Altough the Aisin hubs are pretty much bulletproof, retain the stock axle flanges in the car as an added insurance in case the feewheeling hubs give up.

Cheers

They aren't. The MM550XD I am rebuilding has manual locking hubs, and I did not find the locking mechanism very reassuring. It is prone to wear and quite sensitine to dirt.

If one manages to get dirt into them, the hubs tend to stick in the open position. Alway carry an allen key to open the cover just in case.

Hey Vaibhav
Long time no see, Did you go to the desert storm rally. How did it go??

BTW is it possible to install LSD's in the Gypsy?? If yes is it an easy or difficult modification??

DD, I am happy with mine and it has been a standard on all army MM540s and the earlier gypsys. A manual hub lock is a fairly basic mechanism. No fancy engineering involved. If you had a lathe you could build one your self. The only concern if anything at all would be the quality of the metal used which might cause the lock to break/snap. The mechanism itself is very simple..

Besides they are cheap and the only option available in India unless you want to import a Warn one which can fit the Mahindras.

Thanks.

I too thought it was a 2000 model but am now told it is 2001 model.

So I guess I can fit these Lambda FWH's or get some off a 1999/2000 army MM550 from Mayapuri.

Is it a simple 10 minute fitting job ?
