4X4: It was done in Trivandrum by my friend. There is a small problem with the steering and we need to fix it. The PS is def good but let me wait till the problem is fixed before I pass my judgement. Also, I found the Aramada steering assembly awesome. Actually I wanted to setup the Armada one but we got this setup cheap so went with that.

Nitrous: Thats not yet decided. Currently, the Jeep is in Ramesh's shed. He is in Velachery near to the bridge. His dad has been working on Jeeps for the last 40 years and he also has been with Jeep and they service a lot of government jeeps. Plus I hear that this is not a compliecated engine. I am hearing good things about Popoular Automobiles who specialize in engine rebuilds. So still thinking.

Yesterday got the quote from the Mechanic:

Labour: 10,000 Rs
Lathe Work : 5,000 Rs

Spares Required:

Required List:
Main Bearing 10size 1set
Connect Rod bearing 10 size 1set
Connect rod 1 number
Main bearing trust washer 1 set
piston rings 1set 1st oversize
timing chain
timing chain tensioner
wall tapet
cam shaft bush (optional)
main bearing robe (made in france)
Head gaskit 3rd oversize (option 1 sympson=Rs.400, option2 mahindra=Rs.2100 both are good)
Radiator top and bottom hose
Oil filter

COST: 7,400 Rs (This was the quote from RK Automobiles in Chennai)

Optional List:

Clutch plate
Clutch bearing
clutch Disk

COST: 4,000 Rs

Engine oil 71/2 liter

Summary Cost for Engine Buildup:
1. Mechanic Charge = 10000
2. Lathe work = 5000
3. Required Parts = 7,400 (+ head gasket either sympson or OE)
4. Option Parts = 4,000
5. Engine Oil = 800 (Approx)
TOTAL = 27,200 Rs

So looking at a 30K budget.

Dear Madbullram - From all posts that I have read so far, I understand that the car is now in Chennai (please correct me if I am wrong). My recommendation is to please get the work done by M&M Chennai dealer. Please PM me. I will guide you in totality. Any other route will not give desired results.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Hi Behram,
Thanks a lot. I did approach Mahindra dealers but the attitude was really bad. They treated me like unwanted fellow trying to rob their precious time from the Scorpio and other big customers. Also, since the Jeep also has Tata Seira components they said they will have to think about it. The guy was also saying they havent worked on such vehicles and have to think of taking it or see if they have anyone who has the experience.

I have sent a PM. Hope it would help!

Please see my PM to you. Don't worry, you will have a turnaround experience soon.

Best regards,

Engine Pics

Went to the garage and did a thorough inspection. Still have decided on whom to hit the rebuild. I have my mechanic who seems to be honest and was straight forward. Has good experience and is a authorised government jeep technician.

Then I have Mahindra Garage OE guys who I am sure will do a very good job but will cost me twice which is little difficult situation for me considering my personal financial situation. Still thinking.

The current analysis:
  • the Piston is fine and only rings needs to be changed
  • One connecting rod is badly burnt and others are fine, still micron test has to be done. So need to buy one rod alone
  • Once done all might be 10 oversize and worst case would the bad one will be 20 oversize and the others 10 oversize
Now pics:

This is the badly affected one and also you can see the connecting rod that was burnt in the pics below.

The first one is the burnt one and the next is the normal one which will be retained.

What does he mean by con rod burnt? Can you elaborate please? Generally, if one opens the engine, it is necessary to replace rings and in some cases bearings as well!

These 3 pics tells you how we loaded the Jeep on the truck using a small mud mount and with help of locals . All they wanted was a cup of tea for this.I saw the difference between City Folks and Village Folks. Unadulterated life.

I should say that bit of luck was with you to get such a sandhead at the middle of nowhere
