Bumpers are temporarily removed (though i prefer spidey without them ), snorkel fitment inside was tricky due to the bilstien's clamping in spidey. Small rework had to be done to do the piping for this.

re: Snorkel for my 4x4

One question to all those who have fitted this type of snorkel. Does it in any way hamper vision while driving? Are there any blind corners? I would feel a mushroom head snorkel fitted at Bonnet length would hamper vision as much as this set up would.

re: Snorkel for my 4x4

This setup hardly poses a line of sight problem!! You never notice it, the A Pillar will cover it nicely. PS - If you are getting the fiber/placstic one, you need to be extra careful with trees/thick branches, else will crack the head into pieces. I got a swastik made aluminum replica, heavy - but cant break.

re: Snorkel for my 4x4

Excuse me Sirs ,

can anyone tell how water ( Rain/splash ) gets separated in this thing ? ( the snorkel )

I really don't know much about this -- trust me

Is there any drawing to illustrate ?

Ditto - seems to me a mushroom head snorkel like this makes more sense ?

re: Snorkel for my 4x4

David does your set up allow you to put your windscreen down if need be? Im looking at an alternative where i do not have to fix it to the windscreen frame, though the chances of my putting the windscreen frame down and driving are very remote, yet i do not want to loose the aspect.

Hi Rajubhai,

here is an excerpt from the Safari Snorkel catalogue.

All Safari Charge Air Rams feature a highly effective water separator system built right into the air ram in order to remove rain water from the incoming air stream - thus ensuring safe engine operation through even the most torrential tropical storms.

An added benefit of the unique Safari Charge Air Ram is that it can be rotated to any position. This means great peace of mind for those who plan to travel in cold or high altitude conditions where heavy snow falls are anticipated. By rotating the air ram to face away from the prevailing wind/direction of motion, the air ram delivers additional protection from the choking effects of snow build-up inside the air intake.Snorkel for my 4x4-air_ram1.jpg

Been searching for a cross section drawing of the snorkel head for some time on the web.... no luck. At last decided to buy one and learn how this works, should be simple but I don't know how they design it!!

After I started thinking on this been noticing most trailer trucks have snorkels now-a-days, I need to check out one of the heads to see how they separate water.

And I am thankful to you.... don't know how it did not come up when I Googled it.

Of the 4 illustrations, the 4th own, bowl one seems to be the most scientific & effective one with least chance of water entering the intake. Now I understand the major difference from home-brew ones and a professional one.

re: Snorkel for my 4x4

Thanks Nikhil for the Illustrations ,I knew you will have it

looks like a snorkel is not a child's play or a bling accessory for a city street dweller Jeep ( read Cafe showoffs ) .

Another Question -- what should be the ideal pipe dia ( going up from the air filter )

In other words how to determine the pipe dia wrt---

1) engine capacity ( inflow of air )

2) length of pipe from filter to head of snorkel

because if a smaller dia pipe is used its going to create some kind of hurdle for the free flow of air towards filter , will it affect the engine breathing ? ( say even for 2% ) -- smaller the pipe more the resistance

I think there must be some basis for this , can anyone explain ?

Sudarshan

P. S. I think the tractor precleaner will be much bigger for a snorkel head , may get ripped off by tree branches if not fitted properly

i dont know about the pipe length & dia.

the AEV snorkel kits are available with either pre-filter or scoop type.
