MM340 Upgrades

Howdy all. So for the first time i get to lay my hands on a Mahindra Jeep and to be honest I have no prior experience working with old mahindras or what trends they tend to follow.

I need all the suggestions / help to tell me how to go about this vehicle.

Mechanically the car is running decently well and no changes required to that front. Its a seldom driven jeep so no upgrades there unless absolutely necessary.

Current position, most of the car is stripped down. The entire body has been patched up, all rust removed. Some panels have had to be remade. New hood and windshield frame has to be bought because theye rusted beyond repair.

Whats a reliable source in NCR for original MM340 body parts?

Color - i think the owner is tending towards a wrangler yellow. Any other fancies?

Wheels and tires - max tire width for non power steering?

Seating style - recaro style or original with leatherite?

Soft Top and support bars - any particular style?

Cheers.

Red looks nice:

I have seen a few yellow SWB jeeps and they do look tacky but I guess it is personal choice.

Interior wise :

Old esteem seats covered in leatherite will look ok.

Don't go through the trouble or making / repairing. Best to buy new panels. They are cheap!

I remember Delhi members speaking of two Jeep markets in Delhi, but don't recollect their exact names. Please search.

Yellow looks terribly on a Mahindra (though pretty ok on a Wrangler). I'd go for Black or Army Green. If the owner wants something bright, red.

225, no more. I tried a 235 width, but it was touching the insides on full lock.

Go for the Classic-style. Very comfortable & great looking too.

For the soft top:

1. I prefer the standard style.
2. Another option is a bikini top (covers only the front seats). Look up my Jeep thread (first page) for a picture of Ferdi's Jeep running the same.

The only other option for roll over bars, is a straight slant from the top to the rear of the Jeep (versus the standard L shape for the 2 side bars).

First, you should stop calling it a car, it is Jeep. Secondly, there is no MM340, it is either CJ340 or CL340 or CL340 Classic.

This depends a lot on the purpose of the Jeep, it is going to be an offroader or bling-bling Jeep?

GTO, yeah partial flooring and side body was rusted so it had to be repaired. But the glass frame and hood have to be bought. Havent had the time to go around delhi looking for some. I guess mayapuri is the place to start with.

215/75 and 235/75 are the two options that are available. All depends on the stock tire OD i guess. Can add slightly negative offset wheels to provide for 235 if needed to be put.

Have asked to owner to chose between the bikini and standard top. Should get to know in a day.

Samurai, my bad!! definitely have to remind myself not to call it a car again.

Dhabhar sir, pics coming up...

mayapuri and meerut are the two nearest places where you can source parts like body panels, windshield etc for the 340.

you also try looking in the Jama Masjid area of the old delhi for some parts, but i doubt if you can find jeep parts there!

ask the owner if he wants a every day bling bling jeep or wants a genuine weekend offroader?

also the out come of the final shape of the jeep depends upon the age group/taste and pocket of the owner of the jeep!

the offroad and 4x4 section if full of builds of jeeps, look and hunt down the photos and show them to the owner to see what he actually wants!

best of luck. (Its a Jeep by the way!)

This will never be a serious offroader. The Jeep is being handed down from father to a teenage son. So it should be more of a "road presence" thing than "off road" thing.

Here are curret pics, after stripping down and body repaired.

Arush, I see there is a plaque on the dash behind the steering wheel. If you can post the close up photo of that, we can be sure what Jeep we are dealing with.

Infractions: 0/1 (5)

This is not the 3 series. It is a CJ/CL 500.

Cj340

Hi Arush,

This is a CJ340.

1) Notice the tub rails there are 2 metal plates welded with bolt holes for the ALUMINIUM frames for the soft top, this was carried over to the Classic.

2) The Rear Tail-Gate has been reinforced for the Spare Tyre.

3) 5 - 15" Wheels (originally white for the CJ340 series)

4) Kick-out air-vents along the cowl.

5) Brackets for the soft-top doors

Regards,

Arka

PS - Also check for holes for the Grab-handles e.g ex-army CJ3B
