CJ3B & CL340 CJ340 (Mechanical Differences & Similarities)

Hi everybody

I have not opened this thread for a comparison between the two vehicles as both have their own fan following positive and negative factors

As now many members are buying CJ3B's (3B) and CL340/CJ340's (340) I was just wondering what are the basic mechanical differences and similarities between both these model of vehicles.

Let me start by the first and the most easy oneJust leaving this factor aside what are the other mechanical points/ factors that set these vehicles aside???

Also till what year were both these vehicles manufactured in India!!!

MODS I was earlier thinking of starting this thread in the 4x4 Technical section but I thought as this discussion is about the vehicles in general I started it in the 4x4 Vehicle section.
If its in the wrong section or another similar thread exists anywhere please transfer/ merge this thread!!!

Excellent thread Harjeev. I would have named it as "All you wanted to know about Jeeps but were afraid to ask":D

Thanks for starting this thread as a lot of us newbies to 4X4 country will benefit from this. Ok Gurus, fire on and let the knowledge flow.

Behrambhai, Where art thou?

There are quite a lot of differences even amongst the CJ 340 and CL 340. The pump that comes in the newer Classic is very much different than the earlier CL 340.

The pedals in the CJ 340 and CJ3B are floor mounted and the Classic has suspended ones.

The dash, bumpers, instrument cluster and bull bar are unique to the Classic, the hood and roll cage are similar for the CJ 340 and CL 340. These are the first few things that come in my mind.

Similarities:

1) All 3 are SWB. 81" wheel base & 48" track.

2) I think other than the engine mount between diesel/petrol - the chassis is pretty much the same. (please correct me if i am wrong)

Diff:
1) All CJ3B came with only petrol engine (i think there are 2 types offered??)

2) All CJ340/CL340 only came with the Peugeot 2112CC Diesel engine.

so then the 340 roll cage will not fit on the CJ3B directly?

I am not sure about that.

CJ3B fans may wish to check out this brilliant website dedicated to the model called the CJ3B Page. Following is a link to the specs page.

Jeep CJ-3B Specifications

BTW I keep noticing many referring to the wheelbase as 81 inches when it is apparently 80 inches for the CJ3B.

Here is whatever little I know about these 2 JEEPs

CJ3B - Originally made by Willys with the F-134 Hurricane engine, 3 Speed T-90 Gearbox and Spicer T 18 Transfer case. Was originally LHD but when mahindra started making them in india, it was made as RHD. Axle Ratio - 4.27:1

CJ / CL340 - Same wheelbase & track. Mahindra opted for the 2112 cc Diesel engine and KMT90 4 Speed Gearbox. The classic came with suspended pedals to accomodate the servo booster for disc brake. Axle Ratio - 5.38:1

Two points from my side!

CL 340 has got a disc brake at front.
I think the CL340 differentials are wider than CJ3B...(am I right?)

thanks
Sali..

Guys, let's not rehash what is already discussed here: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-t...sic-cj340.html

The CJ3A came with go-devil engine which could fit into low bonnet Jeep. CJ3B came with Hurricane engine. The Hurricane engine needed more space, hence CJ3B came with high bonnet.

BTW, all CL340s are not different than CJ340. All CL340s are not Classic.

CJ340 was made between 1989-1994. Starting 1995, CJ340 was renamed as CL340, no other difference. In late 1996, the CL340 underwent major modification and we know it as Classic. The production of Classic ended in 2000.

So does this mean that CJ3B's were manufactured only till 1989???

Also I forgot to ask in my earlier post, one main query I had in my mind
As the Hurricanes were manufactured only till 1989 and then came the SWB diesels, leaving aside the engine servicing and overhauling part how different or difficult is it to service the CJ3B's in comparison to the Diesel SWB jeeps. By service I mean gearbox, transfer case, differentials, wheels, suspension, electrical, alternator, starter, etc etc etc. Everything else in the jeep leaving aside the engine part.
I am asking this as majority of the mechanics who are in the Mahindra workshop (authorised) these days have worked mostly on diesels vehicles. So would they easily be able to work and understand the petrol CJ3B's.

This question I am asking in specific to my CJ3B 1965(LHD) and 1985(RHD).

No no no:Shockked:, the CJ3B was stopped in 1968, along with Willys. After that Mahindra made CJ3B clones with international 3+1 engine, I am not too sure about this era. I don't think Hurricanes were made after 1968.

if 1968, then after that what happened? probably someone should throw light on history of the SWB with M&M. When did M&M start introducing the SWB in India and what was the 1st engine?

The above will make sense and act as a missing link between post 1990 CJ340's --> classic and 2000 (stopped prod). No one has spoken clearly on when did the SWB roll out of M&M's assy line.

Samurai,

My CJ3B is a hurricane powered and mfgd in 1969 by Mahindra & Mahindra and this one is original Right hand drive SWB. Till 1967 all the CJ3Bs were Left hand Drive

Until CL340 (1996), all the SWB had the same differential ratio, the latest SWB CL340-CLASSIC got 4.88 ratio

The booster assisted break is new from CL340-CLASSIC

Center mounted spare wheel came from CJ340 era

Side mounted Spare wheels were from original Willys CJ3B, when mahindra mfgd them, the spare wheel got into swing open doors then became integral part of the swing open tail gate itself

Untill 1966, the front cross member was in cylinder shape and later ones were box type

Untill CJ340, all SWBs had push open windshield mirrors and previous such as MA, MB, GPW, CJ2A, CJ3A got split type too. The RCL model Jeeps made by Mahindra got differnt windshield to accomodate a rocket launcher.

KMT-90 and T90 with Spicer-18 transfer case is part of new and old CJ3B sibligings respectively

Untill CJ340 all the SWBs had 16inch rims and the later ones used 15inches with radial tyres

There were numurous changes between individual models of SWB Jeeps.

The history after 1968 is hazy to me.

The SWB Jeeps were assembled by M&M since 1945 under license from Willys. Then M&M stood for Mahindra & Mohammed. How many of you knew that? lol:
