I have sent My Gypsy for Vehicle inspection as the insurance is lapsed. Now the person inspecting the vehicle say’s, he is not able the find the chassis number. I called up a mechanic, He said it is below the right rear wheel.

Experts please advice.

Hi Krishna,

The Chassis No. is Behind the Left Rear Wheel, after the Leaf Spring Hanger. (towards the Tail Gate)

For further details send a PM to Vikram R aka Headers.

Regards,

Arka

there is a plate on the left side of front passenger legroom having both engine no & chassis number punched to it
Insurance guys generally stencil that.

On a gypsy, the chassis number is embedded on he part of the chassis behind the right rear wheel. There is a covering for the petrol pipe (it might be missing in most of the gypsies). You can see the chassis number on the bar (part of the chassis) over there.

VIN tags are never used for prints because they are only rivited onto the body of a vehicle and hence can easily be changed. The Chassis Number is stenciled for the print by the RTO.

Confirm what tharakan9 is saying. I was having problems finding it too as it had got covered with the black japan coating I had applied on the underbody but it is right there if you scratch a bit.

Hello,

Bumping up this thread since I just cannot find the chassis number on my 1996 Gypsy 410W.

Is it behind the covering for the petrol pipe, or on the covering?

A photograph of the exact spot will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

AB

The chassis number is behind the wheel-arch on the beam. Look under the right-side tail lamps and you will find it there.

Did you look on the left side? I know this pic shows right. But from what I remember it used to be on the left. The earlier post mention left rear chassis too. Try looking on the left

So it was the right side. My bad too. Not seen that chassis print on the gypsy for nearly 24 years now.

Thanks Mate. Its actually on the right rear side. The issue why i couldnt see was that the custom bumper was fixed to the chassis and the bracket came on top on the chassis hence i was not able to spot it:Frustrati.

last week a scrap dealer offered me a1972 model jeep, but it had lost its engine . the RC book was endorsed with an diesel engine number with 11 digits starting as 60-1001-xxxxx.can anyone help me to identify which engine is this?
