Re: XD3P Engine & 5-speed Gear Box

First of all XD3P is a beautiful engine especially on a SWB vehicle , less weight , free revving ability etc BUT .

While you rebuild a XD3P be sure to change almost all the parts which may be in a OK condition in your mech's point of view. while doing rebuild never assemble the engine from the lathe shop, It should be done by an experienced hands with extra care & time, Most of the industrials/lathe guys will just assemble it but not with love&care, XD3P is like a child it needs love & care.

in My place almost all the mechs says IPL pistons, rings, sleeves are the best, I was not able to source them so ended with My mech's second choice

Piston - Goetze Piston
Rings - M&M
Sleeve- SLEEVE INDIA

these are the main parts I changed in my XD3P while doing the rebuild.

Engine Bearings -
Timing Chain
timing chain tensioner
rocker arm shaft
water pump Assembly
Radiator thermostat valve
Gasket (3Cut)

After 13k or something around it It lost the gasket, Changed again with the same Millers gasket, Sold the jeep But up to now no problem. New owner is fully satisfied with the performance.

Just My experience, I won't do a engine rebuild on XD3P , reason spending 40-50k on a engine rebuild that too on NGCS is not worth the money & time.

Regards,
I realize this is an old thread, but I'll submit that it's COST, of course, but particularly extra COST in light of the fact that no additional benefits would be realized, since Army vehicle convoys have specified max. speeds of probably 40kmph, where of course a fifth gear could hardly be used. Granted, the Jeeps are often used by staff/officers who might travel alone and want to go faster on occasion - but they're probably not (officially) supposed to!!!

Just my guess.

Yups looks like its a XD 4.9P all right. I have it in my jeep though a few things are un familiar in the above pics. The engine oil dipstick is taller, fuel pump is different, radiator fan mounting bearing looks different.

Anyone tried mating BA10 with XDP4.90

Hi,
I am thinking of putting a BA10 5+1 gearbox on a 2WD MM750DP ST. I just feel it can really use a gearbox with overdrive. Anyone tried it before? I don't want to illegally modify changing the engine also to XD3P.
