Can the Thar's 4wd be fitted onto the Scorpio 2wd?

Note from Mod : The Thar's full test & review has been uploaded at this link.

Hi All,
Since the Thar has been launched with IFS in the front and a manual transfer case using the 2.6 CRDe engine, I was wondering if it is possible to fit the same 4wd aggregates onto the 2wd Scorpio without changing the front suspension and extensive chassis welding?

If yes, is this advisable and what cost might I have to incur?

Re: Can the Thar's 4wd be fitted onto the Scorpio 2wd?

Basically Thar platform seems to be from series of Scorpio before 2005 end , with out CRDE.Now i am planning for a MM550/MM540 body on scorpio non crde 4wd conversion. Please dont change uer 2wd to 4wd , as there a lot of changes in suspension set up from coil springs to Torsion bars,G box, drive shafts an chasis.Still if u feel to do in perfect set up, cost should be some where around 2L.

@devnath: The chasis and front suspension set up is different. This cannot be done safely by a dealer or private workshop at a reasonable cost. For vehicles with IFS and 4WD, it is always cheaper and better to sell and buy the 4WD version.

I agree with Tini ^^, stay away from such practices.

Spike, in case the front suspension mount points of the Thar and the 2wd Scorpio are the same, would it still not be possible? And yes, you need to tell me if they are the same. If they are different, then there is no point.

One has a torsion bar setup (with LCA) other is a coil spring setup. Front axle mounting arrangement makes the difference here.

Re: Can the Thar's 4wd be fitted onto the Scorpio 2wd?

I have a suggestion, why not buy a new 4wd scorpio chasis and then do all the other required modification on that!! I am aware you can get the chasis from factory but with some difficulties.
It would be easier to work with this than modify the existing 2wd chasis.

Possible Spike? In case it is, can you pl suggest if I can also procure the manual Borg Warner transfer case and fit it onto the existing 4wd setup of a 4wd Scorpio.

Why are you insisting on all these? Instead, buy a new vehicle off the shelf. Spike PS- Nothing is impossible.

Let me clarify. The OTR Price of a new MHawk at Blore is around 13.5lac. Even if I spend 4 lacs on Hariya and can convert him into a reliable 4wd, I stand to gain. Moreover, I prefer the CRDe engine to the MHawk due to its simple nature.

Hariya has done around 40k so is still as good as new, inside out.

Now, can you share your inputs and possibilities please Spikey...

Oh yes, and I forgot to add that I m interested in the manual shift lever powered transfer case rather than the electronic one and that is not being offered with the new Scorpio too AFAIK.

Re: Can the Thar's 4wd be fitted onto the Scorpio 2wd?

Dev,

Snap out of this dream of converting your 2WD to 4WD!

Even if Spike gives you all the way it has to be done, with part number and assembly instructions you will fall short of the right man power and tools.

All this unless you plan to ride to M&M factory to get this conversion done.

EDIT:

Sell your Scorpio, take that money, add the 4L you budgeted to the sales proceed, buy a Thar and put in a HT, PS and A/c. You have all you want! (and might end up with some cash)

To begin with, I will not buy the Thar at the kind of interior and exterior F&F that it has been launched with. TBHPians like Fazal make old jeeps a million times better than Thar when it comes to the "Feel Factor". Hell, the decade old Classic "looks and feels" much better.

Moreover, I m not a hard core off roader and have no intentions of being one either.

Secondly, a chassis swap is not a difficult thing at all. You know the kind of people I know.

I m waiting for Spike to reply.

Re: Can the Thar's 4wd be fitted onto the Scorpio 2wd?

This thread is getting more and more interesting. Is it possible to plonk a Scorpio Di( pre 2005) engine on a DI Bolero without much modifications to the gear box set up?
