New 4X4 project
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-technical/98071-new-4x4-project-3.html)
Hey thx for the pics, Never seen a safari chassis, let alone a 4x4 one. How is the body/engine/gb work coming up? Compared to 550 and safari - which is easier to restore?
I am going to fix a new tub on this chassis and not restoring a Safari! If anyone comes across an old wagoneer, nissan pick-up, dodge pick-up, isuzu pick-up or Willys wagon, please let me know!
The suspension work is straightforward with parts being no issue. I now need to plan a 3" lift for the suspension. The rear lift should not be a problem. The front, being a torsion bar setup, should be easy but can the suspension arms handle that kind of lift?
If any bhpian has links to Safari lift kits, please do post.
If anyone knows of a large diesel engine(3.5ltr+) please do let me know!
You are certanlly living king size!! What about swaraj mazda engine comes in 10 tone truck or Eicher. Or even the mahindra cabking engine is also ok. All these got loads of torque for an offroader. But the question is what is in your mind??

Posted it earlier on this thread but here you go again! Once you translate from Italian, you'll see info about a lift kit also.
Tata Club Italia
Also, for a change comments on a youtube video are useful. Have a look at this. Lift kit et al!

Jyobeb,
What rims are those? Gypsy? 15"? Do you plan to retain the same or is this just a temporary touch?

these are stock sumo, safari (old) 15" rims.
the mahindra (new) & tata vehicles have 160 PCD & gypsy has 139.7 PCD so they are not interchangeable.
BTW how to engage & disengage this hub??
Thanks, Jeepster.
I was a bit confused. Long time since I had the Sumo, so didn't recognize the rims. The freewheeling hub confused me even further.
yes these hubs are different than regular selectable & auto locking hubs.
I have never seen a hub like this either. Do you think that the cover from the original Safari hub is missing or did the early Safari have different hubs? This has only permanent lock or auto lock option.

Most likely case would be the hub cover missing. AFAIK, the Safari always came with auto locking hubs and I hardly think the previous user would have changed them to what we see above. Its interesting to see the permanent lock option though. I should check my Safari hubs and see if the hub can come off.
Maybe a box spanner goes in to lock / unlock? Or the locking mechanism been removed and and a bolt has been tightened in to make it 2WD? Castration done to improve "average" :Shockked:
Regards

both hubs have their covers missing??
is it possible to manually set the hubs to
lock or
auto lock positions?? (have you checked their working)
if yes then it will serve the same purpose of the manually
lock /
unlock hubs.
you can lock them when in OTR just like the normal locking hubs.
but even if you forget to lock them they will auto lock when needed. (which dosent happen in normal locking hums :D)
These 31 spline (PCD 90 mm) hubs came with most of the Nissan vehicles (Y60 model specifically). (see attached pic)
It comes with a hex key with which you can set it to always locked (manual) or auto locking.
Hope this helps.
yes these are from the Nissan vehicle. (AFAIK its a warn design)
