Besides the Tata Sumo Gold, Tata Motors’ UV portfolio comprises the the premium Crossover Tata Aria, the Tata Safari 4x4, the Tata Sumo 4x4, the lifestyle pick-up Tata Xenon XT..

Tata sells Sumo 4x4 currently to govt buyers. When I was getting the white elephant repaired at Mandi(HP) Tata motors, a Sumo 4x4 was there for some work. It belonged to keylong adminstration. So tata does sell a sumo 4x4, but how does a normal guy get it is a deep mystery. Somebody has to guide people in totality I guess.

Dear all - guys, this is like "wow"! Just a one liner post and in just two days, it looks like MH01BB4972 is well on its way to becoming a brand on its own merit, based on its performance.

Dear Sharath - what yaar! I can only add a "smiling smiley". :).

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Things are heating up at the Tata Camp..

Tata Sumo Wheelbase : 2400
Tata Sumo Gold Wheelbase : 2425
Capacity: 2956CC 3.0 CR4 Engine
Power: 60-62 kw @3000rpm
Torque: 250Nm @ 1000 to 2000 rpm
------------------------------------------
Mahindra Thar : 2430
Capacity : 2498 CC
Power : 105 H.P. @3800 RPM
Torque : 247 Nm @1800-2000 RPM.
-----------------------------------------

True the body shell is heavier on the Sumo. Strip it and throw in a 4WD gearbox (already in the army), diff locks and some good finishing touches.. and there is competition !

Things are getting interesting for sure with the "smiley" !
A body akin to the defender or even the sierra won't hurt and coupled with the X2 platform it can be quite great .
Bring it on .

Contrary to recent posts , 4972 is not 4 wheel drive , or a at least was not when it participated in the Desert storm 2012 , i know since i did the Pre event scrutiny check of the vehicle.

It was the "normal " sumo gold , fitted with rally equipment (GPS,terratrip Etc)

But i do hope that TATA gets its act together , fixes the bugs and launches a 4x4 version.

I dont want to start a debate , however i must point out that they won thier category in DS 2012 , primarily on the teams exemplary service backup , after every stage you could see the Tata cars at a service point with their front tires out and suspension jobs happening all around.

Indeed. Now another countdown will start!

Having a body shape of Defender will be like a dream. Just like the Jeep, this is another iconic exterior design.

We can hope the sumo body won't be considered since it's got the taxi image, so in all probability the , "Xenon "(SWB) or "Sierra" cabins will be on top of the list .

It's highly unlikely that the "Defender" will be on the list , but it will be a great move if it is considered .

Tata has a very bad habit of tagging old names to new vehicles. By prefixing Vista with Indica and Grande with Sumo, they killed those products before they could take off.

People won't care what platform they use. But if they use the name Sumo or keep the body shape of Sumo, it won't be an egg beater, let alone Thar beater.

The Tata brand managers better realise that they got to lose the name Sumo and lose the looks of Sumo.

Naming is the least of Tata's worries. They also lack engineering know-how. You will actually cry if you see how the suspension and steering system in the old safari was engineered.
The "X2" seems like some holy grail people keep throwing around, conveniently forgetting how the Arias had widespread alignment issue. Here we are talking about a car which never left the main road. Imagine if the X2 platform actually had to go offroading. It would simply curl up and die on seeing the first rock.
But, maybe they want to recreate the army jeep experience. Every 2000kms go to the workshop and get something mended.

Here is something interesting posted by a fellow forum member in the Indian Car Scene.

The article talks about Tata and LR working on entry level SUV with a 2.0 ltr engine.

But, it is a SUV and not an offroader that is being talked about! So we still expect an all Indian made offroader to take on Thar and Gurkha.

I dont know where the drawings of Salil Pawar are, but he sure made an impression with his drawings of Thar hardtop. But he also made few drawings of Tata vehicles.

This one? Seen just outside hebbagodi skf bearing comp wall. Looks as if bullet holes are circled and all glasses shattered. 3row of glass indicates a gun holder hole.

It is an armored sumo for the Indian army, similar to MM Rakshak. It might have been tested for its protection level or the sumo itself must have seen some action in the field.

I don't see any registration/test plate on the sumo.

TATA SUMO 4 x 4.pdf
Here is a TATA SUMO 4 x 4 Ambulance up for auction from the Indian army. Many Ambulances in the in the Northern command are Sumo 4 x 4.

But as of date there is no SUmo / the new SUmo Gold with a 4x4 option offered on sale in the civilian market, right ?
