Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

That was an export version - may be for Africa / Mediterranean ? Language sounded like that.

If it said TDi, then possibly did not have the intercooler. IC was added to later versions ? Possibly same case with the pre-2001 Safari & Sierra's ?

Nice video...it seems quite off-road-worthy.

TDI = TCIC

The language sounds like Spanish, and I can hear 'intercooler' being mentioned.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Driving on the Ring road near Khamakhya today morning, I was along-side a white Sumo. Looked normal, but the wheel arches caught my attention. They looked well mounted, almost OE. And here's what I found :

Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive-sumo4wd0.jpg

The tyres were 215/75 R15's - again, not the regular Sumo size. This is typically found only on Victa's.

Remember, these wheel arches are not found on regular Sumo's. I chased this one upto the Mysore road junction. I tried to check out the front diff, but could not when driving. At the Mysore rd junction, got a chance to get out and peep underneath, but from where I was could not confirm the front diff.

This Sumo belongs to the Atomic Energy dept.

yes only sumo 4x4 has these fender flares.

the differential assembly is well hidden behind the bumper so its little diddicult to see the front differential.

a unique department with unique vehicle.

No need to look underneath to verify if the front diff is present or not ; the easier way : if you are able to see coil springs in the front, it is 2WD, otherwise 4WD (4WD will have the torsion bar setup in the front). This is the Safari setup, and I am guessing it will be the same with the Sumo as well.

You can do this when driving also .

WOW ! A brand new 4X4 Sumo , with the older DX grill (which I like very much, compared to the Victa grill). Thanks for the pic, akshay4587

Any more pics/details ?

even easier ways is to see if it has auto lock hubs. (which all 4x4 sumo, 207, safari, scorpio have in common)

Not so easy if the fancy wheel caps are present (as in the pic posted by condor)

Dear Akshay,
Since this is at the stock yard, I presume its brand new. Could you post more details and pics as requested by others too. Would you also be able to find out if its available for sale on order?

regards
salil

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Tata's were very much keen to launch the 4X4 Sumo's long back ago. But their demand in Defence sector was more than the civilian requirement.

Don't know exactly why they discontinued.

Now, with the new addition of our very own 4X4 doc, Mr. Behram Dhabhar to their Research team, hope they will re introduce the 4X4 Sumo again.

Though we have the xenon in the market, the 4X4 sumo might do some good figures, if priced correctly.

Hope So..

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Hi guys, I just came back after meeting a friend of mine for tea, and we were chatting about the Tata safari. His family is looking at buying one and he gave me the brochure along with the current price list as shown below:

Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive-sumo-0011.jpg

When i was going through the list something caught my eye and this is what i saw:

Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive-sumo-0012.jpg

This price list is from Siliguri, West Bengal. With the hills of darjeeling so close, I guess the dealer is hoping for a few 4x4 sumo bookings. The tag says "Sumo 4x4 Economy", so I am guessing it does not have P.S or A.C.

Anyone else got any news regarding this?

If any of you would like more information, then the land line number and mobile numbers are given on the first attachment.
