Army Sumo 4x4 in Trivandrum

I have been seeing 2 4x4 Sumos @ Pangode military camp. It doesn't look like the ones in the scaps. They are jacked up and have Bridgestone Sand Dueller (Jumbo size as the ones in the Army's MM ISZ). They were ambulance and had 2 yellow beacon lights one in the front and one at the rear.

2.0 L turbo.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Sumo 4x4 with a 2.2 Safari engine. It will make one rugged beast. I always liked the look and stance of the Sumo. The underpinnings were very rugged but it was always underpowered.
Tata should revive the Sumo in 2.2 4x4 version.

Attractive pictures, jeepster.

When I first saw the Tata Sumo, it was the summer of 1994. Was just back from Stockholm and my Swedish customers visited Bombay. They pointed out to me, on the road from Pune to Bombay, four white vehicles loaded on a fifth-wheel trailer truck. We thought they looked like the Mercedes Benz Geländewagen, but turned out to be pansy two-wheel-drive station wagons.

Now this olive-drab beast feels like what the Sumo was always meant to be - a universal go-anywhere wagon. All it now needs is a grunty six-cylinder engine.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

I have been told that Tata does not sell new 4x4 Sumos to civilians. Too bad. If you could get one with the 3.0L in it you would have most of a Ghurkha.

Oh, it was a real pansy alright. I don't know about the current breed, but the Tata Sumo of mid 90s was nothing but a sedan that looked like a MUV. A member of my team had a 1996 model Tata Sumo, which he bought for visiting his farm in the outskirts of Bangalore. It didn't have to do any off-roading, just bad-roading. In one year it underwent so many repairs, my team-member was disgusted. Tata didn't give him warranty coverage on many items saying it was being used in harsh environment. He spent 1.5L in the first one year of ownership on repairs, that was big amount then. The frequent advice from Tata service guys was that he should use it only on good tarmac because Sumo was not fit for rough road duty. BTW, he and I were Tata employees then.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

I come back again to ask the same question over and over again when I have been told that it cannot be done -
Can the Sumo 4X4 underpinnings be taken and fit directly on a 2WD NA Sierra? That way it becomes a good offroader, not the Sumo but the Sierra.
If anyone has any idea about this, please let me know.

Regards,
Kaustubh
