Actually the driveshafts/CV's were all in place (it was only a year-old vehicle and was purchased in 4x4 form because 4x4 is very much needed on the Malana link road) - It was a little dark under there and forgive my not post-processing sufficiently for it;

But I suppose this underscores the fact of extreme similarity with the 2WD version's underpinnings. Wherein, I believe, is also the greatest potential weakness in the IFS setup - Sumo/Spacio chassis rails are very prone to twisting over time when used in continuously rough service, and I could show you pics of many (incl. my father-in-law's!) that are running horrifically positive camber, with all adjustments long since maxed out at the stops. Looks bad, but the tyre wear / evil handling characteristics are even worse. There are ways of straightening the frame rails (hydraulic "porta-power" setups were used in the U.S. back in the day), but nobody up here (or in Mizoram) has the equipment / know-how to do it, AFAIK.

Has anyone tried making a 4wd sumo from a 2wd.
Can a Dana 44 (4.22 or higher) rigid diff's be fitted in front + paired rear, with a Gypsy divorced transfer case.
Or go with a kmt90 and BW transfer case and mate with adapter plate?
Is it practical and do able ?

Doable, yes (remember nothing is impossible)
One of t-bhpian has converted bolero 2WD (IFS) to 4WD rigid suspension with dual transfercase, folding shackles, on-demand welding generator etc.. you get the drift ?
Practical - NO. Better buy a 4Wd bolero with manual BW transfercase, plonk CRDe or MHawk engine and you are good for highway as well as serious offroading (a bolero can do everything and may be more that what a Thar CRde can do that - practical experience, no google knowledge).

Agree with Shubhendra, In theory anything is possible, but no one has done it so far for sumo, so your vehicle will be an r&d test bed in terms of reliablity.

Seems to be old pages. Go back and you see Tata Estate and Tata Seira, vehicles long discontinued. Any way, you can contact them here

I doubt dealer's will accept a booking as very few of them are aware that a 4x4 version of the Sumo exists.
Incidentally, TML also does not push the Sumo 4x4 into the civilian market much (a lost opportunity?).
4x4 Sumo's are usually preserved for fleet sales to Army, Army Ambulance and specific Govt agencies.

Your best bet will be to approach the Regional Sales Office of TML in your city and contact the person responsible for Institution & Defence Sales. As far as i know, they can approve on a case by case basis and allocate a piece to a dealership.
Also it may be worthwhile to check on the financing angle, in case you are planning to take a loan for a potential purchase. As the Sumo 4x4 is not on the "regular" list of cars, most banks are loathe to finance it!

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

MH01BB4972 - This is a "normal " 2 wheel drive sumo , with no additional mechanical changes .

I know , since i was the scrutineer for the Desert Storm rally , in which this car participated

The category that it participated is called "xplore : and it has normal road going cars as petrticpants - The year that this came , we had Altos and swifts on the same track

This is the old Safari BSIII 1995cc Indirect Injection TCIC engine. I guess this was always available on order from the commercial division.

However, Army has the 3.0 Dicor engined ones (The Ambulance) with the larger wheels, which has not been made available to the civilian market.

Definitely the older 2.0 IDI engine. I live in Niligiris and Poliice dept has a number of these older 4WD version. As you correctly pointed out Army ambulance the the 115 bhp Dicor engine from the previous Safari.

Hi Jeepster,

Any word from Vipraajesh regarding how he ordered the vehicle, what it's on road price is and how it drives ?

What is strange for me is that the vehicle doesn't seem to have any form of forced ventilation system.

Cheers,

FourWheelDrift
