Re: "Heart Over Mind" 2001 MM550 XD - Rebuild

Just loved the way you have built your jeep. Very tastefully done & the colour is super! My uncle in bangalore had a grey MM540 hard top which was the only one in that part of bangalore that time. The snorkel is very well finished.
I know this might be amateurish, but just wanted to know if MM550 available for the public on made-to-order basis? And whether it had an all time 4x4?

MM540/MM550 is no longer available as a brand new vehicle. You can Buy Thar CRDe / Di. There are few difference between civilian MM550/MM540 and Army MM550DX. Ex-army MM550DXs are available through some army Jeep/Scrap dealers and few restores who makes running condition jeeps and makes money

All the models of MM 4WD Jeeps came with a manuel/Electronic 4WD transfer Case not All time 4x4. I hope you got some idea . Go through the technical section under 4x4 section you will get lot of valuable information regarding 4x4s Jeeps,Gypsy etc..all most all questions about Jeeps are answered buy the Tbhpians in different restoration threads go through that you will be bitten by the BUG.

Expecting open opinion and suggestions for improvement .

there is a particular reason behind this (fitting on axle tube will post once I got the disadvantages) I need to test on trials.

Re: "Heart Over Mind" 2001 MM550 XD - Rebuild

when your right wheel is flexed in and left wheel inside a rut - this setup will not allow the shock to turn/rotate on axis and will break the mounts, thats why the company setup is on the chassis - let me post a pic...

scratch that ^

This setup will still work with a SMALL but IMP mod - on the axle housing side mounting, instead of the bolt being north-south, make a juggad so that bolt is horizontal (front back) - in that case the shock will pivot freely when the axle goes up and down - hope i am able to be clear here...

Sorry head is fuzzy - scratch #2 - go back to drawing board with #1 - in your current setup - all road vibrations, axle movements will be translated to this new damper unnecessarily - thats why the chassis-to-tierod connection is good and free from any unwanted shocks from bad roads... with me?

In this case both the tie rod and the axle tube moves up and down together right ? that means both the end of shock will move up and down with respect to the up and down movement of axle tube and tie rod. In MM OEM set up one end is fixed to the chassis so the other end should pivot freely when the axle goes up and down but in my case both ends moves up and down. and its the OEM set up for CJ7 - Wrangler

In my case the problem is the sudden return of steering in off road because of the front LSD I know I can't do any thing to prevent that steering behavior. but by this set up I can prevent a little of that immediate return before it gets in to the steering that means the shocks gives a support to the tie rod and It works too I tested in real life situations and want to test in offered to check the reliability.

Sreejesh, how is the performance of front LSD, in any case, have you felt it could be manually controlled lockers?

Please share.

It is the normal Clutch assy & pressure plate used in armada & old Bolero. but not the original one used in MM550 XD. it costs me 3900.00 with tax original MM from authorized dealer.

For the money and effort front LSD is the cheapest option if you want more traction. But is really hard to keep the jeep on track. But on rock it performs like a dream but in sticky mud/slush it Drives the jeep.
