Manas,

You did a lot on the HT front and the 2% that will make a 50% difference in the design, as I feel is the side glass window.

Its boxy and disproportionate, tall and not long enough.
Rear end should slope with the tail gate profile, something like the red line in the below pic.

Remember the TATA Sierra, its side fixed glass? The aesthetics and size of that window did wonders to that particular model.

The internal should be better finished or covered, like the top done in Delhi.

Re: Tharred and Feathered - BlackStarr arrives

Thanks sir.

I know the rear side windows have been a problem. We intitially designed the windows like in your pic. the problem was to source a window which would be available in the market which would have the same dimensions. We have originally got a single glass made which would fit that design. But it made more sense to get one which was readily available in the market. In case it broke or scratched up or cracked, it would be easily replaceable by anyone anywhere in India.
Imagine, being in the middle of nowhere and having to replace the window. The window we used is straight from the Sumo.

We can still do the single glass window, but replacing it means you will have to get it custom made. We have a mold which has that window design. I have attached a pic of the original glass shape as well as the original FRP.

Hope my explanation makes sense to you!

The internals are being done - not finished yet. I just wanted to give a picture of what the latches we have used look like. I will post pics of the internals once it is complete - probably Sunday or Monday and then it will look much better.

Let me know what you think of the original glass and FRP that I have posted.

Thanks,
Manas

Re: Tharred and Feathered - BlackStarr arrives

Manas,

What you have stated definitely makes sense.

The point that I would like to put to you is, firstly Sumo has been more or less phased out and the availability of its glass would not be freely available in the middle of nowhere, if not today, then tomorrow.

A customer-centric plan would be to make it possible for the buyer of your HT to have the option to get the custom one fixed by you in case he breaks it, at a reasonable rate plus the installation charges which he would anyhow have to pay to an outside vendor too.

It would be better if you go ahead with your molded glass as it has more appeal, aesthetic and integrates with the rear slope of the HT.
Yes, it is anytime a better choice.

What is the handle on the molded glass for?

The top end and bottom end of the window slant (rear) should be 100% in sync with the slope of the FRP top. In the photograph (red arrows) it doesn't seems so, or I may be wrong. Likewise the front end of the window slant (green arrows) should be in 100% sync to the B pillar.

Dear Fazal - what yaar, this is too much! .

Sumo has just been launched last month in BS4 and BS3 levels in four trim versions, CX, LX, EX and GX at an absolutely killer price. . A lot of good work has gone into making it what it is now. I suggest you drive the BS4 GX vehicle and judge for yourself. It offers extremely good value for the money at which it is available in the market. It is now in demand like never before. Each and every part is available and will continue to be available.

Dear Manas - sorry for writing about another vehicle in your Thar thread but I guess I had to clarify.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Spot on Fazal Sir. Manas, yes i was referring to these two aspects only. Particularly the rear slope will actually make it almost flawless. About the finishing, i am sure once you plan to launch this commercially, that aspect will be well taken care of.

Re: Tharred and Feathered - BlackStarr arrives

The side windows we wanted initially was a single piece window which could be removed completely. The handles on the glass are to fit the window onto the FRP and remove it!

Working with the budget we had at the time, we didn't have the money or time to think about a sliding glass window with a frame and locking mechanism. Will re-look at this now though since there is some breathing space and time. I will finally have my Thar back this week and can start driving it again! This time with the hard top complete.

The rear of the windows are parallel to the FRP and the front as well. the photo I posted was a work in progress one and in the actual piece it was fixed properly. Swamy and Vijay have seen the original top and should be able to comment.

Thanks to Kandisa and Fazal sir for your thoughts and feedback.

Regards,
Manas

Mansam,

You are most welcome. Your window is far better in design.

Re: Tharred and Feathered - BlackStarr arrives

Hi Manas,

Slowly but Surely. Kudos to you.

Progress looks good. The latches look robust enough to hold.

Have you seen latches where the locking mechanism(handle?) swivels down, and you have to turn it 90deg to lock? Not sure of availibility in India, but I assume you understand what I'm talking about. I feel with time and a lot of vertical forces acting on your latch, if it will stay true.

My 0.02 paisa.

Is that an old generation Sumo window, or a BS4 GX one?

Cheers

Ride Safe.

Re: Tharred and Feathered - BlackStarr arrives

Gthang - thanks for the link! Have contacted them and they are supposed to get back to me.

In the meantime, here are some completed pics of the top.

The rear is a little messy cos of pain spills etc - will be replacing the carpeting. But it is all done now except for paint for the actual vehicle as well as cleaning of the interiors.

Cheers,
Manas
