you worried a bout a 5K battery i think you should worry a 15K overhaul.

as any water cooled vehicle if driven without fan belt can cause over heating & thus resulting in Piston Seizures or worse a full engine seizure.
Thanks for the Jeep gyan ,I am really learning the jeep thing kudos to you people.
I drove the vehicle for about 3 kms without fan belt,
I am quite concerned this could have done some damage to the engine.

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

Today ,I took the mm540 for long distance test drive(relatively speaking).
I went to nearby city for paperwork regarding my farm in Mirzapur.
Sorry ,I forgot to take my camera ,I promise to post some quality pictures during next visit.
The road was NH-2 for 40kms but next 30 kms were barely navigable beyond 30kmph.
The ride of MM540 is qualitatively far better than my MM CJ500D.It was more in league of bolere with leaf spring suspension .The mileage turned out to be decent 12kmpl,not too bad I think given the pathetic post half the journey.
One thing which needs mention that before starting the journey we had interchanged the batteries of MMCJ500D,which is just a month old with that of MM540 which being one year old and after that fine belt episode had been rendered completely discharged.
Now with new battery we were on surer grounds, as the jeep was now starting on single crank after using the heater two times back to back.
Pray ! tell me should one keep depressing the accelerator while cranking the MM540 engine.
regards
praveen

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

Dear bhpians ,yesterday I got my jeep serviced which included the following
1.Engine oil change -5 litres of multigrade IPOL 20w40
2.Air cleaner was dismantled and pressure washed
3.Engine oil filter and diesel filter both were changed former being and elofic filter and later bosch ones.
4.Front leaf spring count was 10 on each wheels which was changed to 9 leafs each taking out one auxiliary leaf from each side , now the ride is pretty better

Post the servicing the my jeep sounds and drives better ,and the starting trouble is no more giving me headaches.
The old mechanic which sees my jeep has adviced to go for multiple heating the engine before cranking and phew the beast comes to life in couple of seconds .
I think the fellow bhpians who have MM 540 should take note of this .
happy and safe motoring

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

Today I went for greasing all the joints and points in leaf springs ,and steering .
The vehicle is now quite smooth as compared to earlier
Please anybody tell me the engine oil capacity of MM540 1996 model .
My mechanic told me that its 5lites only .

bid adieus to starting trouble

Now post the new trick I have learnt through a mechanic ,the beast is coming to life with a single Vrooooom. So finally I have subdued or took care of starting trouble.
Now few things which I want to taken care of
1.The body produces a lot noise ,khut, khut and thud thud
2.The steering assembling produces loud khut-khut sound when the beast goes through big craters or bad patch.
3.The beast looses its steam past 70kmph and cries hoarse at this speed
4.It gets pretty hot inside the jeep-What could be the solution ,are the openable glass frame available for mm 540?
p.s.- I have two girl friends (read jeeps) to take care of now so I have to improvise and invest prudently

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

See my two cents

1.The body produces a lot noise ,khut, khut and thud thud

Normal in a jeep . But do check all the nuts and bolts . May be the body bushes are in a bad shape.

2.The steering assembling produces loud khut-khut sound when the beast goes through big craters or bad patch.

This should be mainly because of the Steering connection rod kit. Check Santosh Svs thread and he mentions it there.

3.The beast looses its steam past 70kmph and cries hoarse at this speed

Hmmm I think it should be normal at a 4.88 axle ratio.

4.It gets pretty hot inside the jeep-What could be the solution ,are the openable glass frame available for mm 540?

It can be done . I have seen some 550s having it .

Common with jeeps. Still check all the body bushes, tighten all nut-bolts.

Check the steering system, particularly the tie-ends. If required, replace with genuine new parts.

Limiting speed is slightly on the lower side may be.Don't have much experience with diesel jeeps, so can't comment more.

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

Dear kandisa ,what should be approximate cost of the front openable glass frame.I know I have to source it from delhi .
Moreover for the steering noise ,i will get it checked asap.
Thirdly the body noise has to be dealt by a good denter.

Will enquire from the Mahindra workshop here and let you know. I have seen them fitting a new frame in one of the jeeps earlier.

Which set of tyres should I look for my MM540 ,as two rear ones are crying for replacement .I have drive over rock strewn dirt road to my farm once a while ,
My daily drive is more in nature of city rides and .
So the requirement is 80 percent city driving and rest offroading .
Please suggest a value for money tyre which is durable too

Ok sir ,I would definitely think over it .
One thing more,Dear Mr. Shekaran
I perused your public profile and came to know that you have altered your differential ratio from stock 4.88 to 4.27 .
Can you elaborate why you did so?
regards
praveen

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

i did not alter my diff ratio, but wanted to do so. i am looking for 4.27 diff gears as i have 4.88 ratio now in my MM540, which limits my top speed to 99-95kmph at peak rpm.
altering to 4.27 ratio can make your jeep run a little bit less noisier for the same top speed. using 4.27 diff gears can make your jeep give 1-2kmpl more mileage - reasonable speed in less rpm's - smoother drive etc.,.
pls pass info if you know anyone selling 2 sets of 4.27 diff gears - am even ready to exchange my 4.88 gears with the carrier plate - thanks in advance.
Reg 185/85R16 tyres, i recommend them bcoz personally am using it, finding the ease of steering nice in daily drives in the city traffic, adequate width for grip/braking/wet roads etc., all terrain tread pattern, fits on OE rims like a glove to the hand, tyre size comes in mm loadcabs, so enough durability, less road noise, tried it in wet roads - braking superb (for jeep standards), lastly my offroading is very minimal, like farm roads, forest tracks occasionally. for your useage 80/20% on/offroad, this tyre would be the cost effective alternative other than the NDMS tyres.
best regards.

Re: Yet another MM 540DP

you can also use a MRF steel muscle tyre 185/85/15.

will cost around 5.2K .

rated for highway & dirt roads. (so you can do little bit of offroading)

they are durable too.
Yet another MM 540DP-moto_0110.jpg

Yet another MM 540DP-moto_0112.jpg

or you can buy a set of 7.50x16 tyres that i have on my armada.

will cost less than 4K.

they are not that good on the road, horrible on the wet road & too noisy (which i like).
will not last long as radials. (if used on the highway)
but worth every penny for the looks.
ATF Farm King Tyres

IMO the ATF sand cum highway will be similar to the MRF sand grips.

  • Slush: Bad

I have taken my MM540XD up to Kanakpura/Muthathi and the nearby off-road Trails and the only problem was in mud/slush.

Most people run the MRF Sand Grip over inflated to get the best out of the tyre.

some suggest Tyre Pressure for the MRF Sand Grip.

Road - 28-35 psi depending on the Wheel Disc.

Sand - 10-15 psi

Rocks -15-20 psi

Trails - 20 psi

After 15-20K kms the tyre is suitable for only Road and Sand use.
rgds,
Nikhil

the tyres can be used with 540 & 500 with stock rims so in case you want to upgrade the tyres next time you can use these on the 500.
