A new project: '04 Mahindra MM550

Picked up an ex army mm550 2004.Sorry can't post the vehicle's complete pictures as the mechanics had already dismantled half the jeep by the time i arrived from out of town.
The front differential was opened and refitted after the bearings were cleaned and greased as none needed replacement. The tie rod ends and disc pads were replaced. The radiator, starter motor and alternator have been sent for servicing. These are the only pics i clicked before the body will be taken off the chassis tomorrow.Planning to replace the engine and gear with a Nissan RD 28 and Isuzu 5 speed 4wd gear.

Re: A new project:mm550 2004

Sammy , congrats . Which RD28 did you source , the 12 valve or the 18 valve. Can you share the cost if its fine with you.

Did you get the regular isuzu GB or the bigger single unit one?

You need to cut the front grill inside about 3 inches and also the firewall.

What tyre and diff ratio combo are you planning to use ?

Any plans to turbo the RD28?

@ jeepster
Thank you brother. Will be posting the detailed pictures of the
restoration.
@ Frankenstein
I do have a 12 valve engine lying but am in the process of
procuring an 18 valve engine. The gearbox is going to be
the MUA5 .Even i was thinking of turbo charging it ,will
be discussing the project with you before proceeding further.
Will let you know the price when i get a confirmation. The tires
are either going to be 275/70 R16 or 31x10.50 R 16.The diff ratio
will depend which 1 works best as the jeep will be used on road and
off road .

Re: A new project:mm550 2004

Congrats Bro!! Can you confirm whether its the NGCS model or not? If it is, its probably one of the first few NGCS 550's to be auctioned by the army and you are one lucky guy. In a way, its great news that NGCS ones are now out in the scrap market. And regarding tyres, you've mentioned 275-70-R16. So, will it need some major mods? Can a 550 without PS handle this size? Pls provide the details of this. Eagerly waiting to see the result on looks and performance.

Re: A new project:mm550 2004

12 valve is just fine , dont bother with the 18 valve.

MUA5, there are 2 types , the smaller one with the iron aux GB and removable bellhousing and the other with an alluminium aux GB and a fixed Bell housing.

A friends friend got the ARB turbo kit for the RD28 in his Nissan Patrol, but after that there was no power at all. I will check with him what went wrong and then only think about the turbo.

With 31" you can go for 3.73 or 4.27.

Try sourcing the original RD28 liquid filled mounts(oil filled).I have them.

Can you source me the timing gear for the 18 valve?

Re: A new project:mm550 2004

@ wanderer thank you.It is a ngcs model.Been on a lookout for these for a long time. This time i got lucky. No major mods are needed to fit these tires only a 2" lift does the trick.
@ Frankenstein
Most probably will go in for the smaller one as it has a removable bell housing. Will get a new bell housing casted so that the gear is a direct fit to the engine thus eliminating the need for an adapter plate. Will surely look for the mounts.
There is a person in delhi from whom my father procures all the spares needed for his beauties. Will PM you his contact no.

Re: A new project: '04 Mahindra MM550

Finally after much deliberations decided to stick with the XD3P engine, since the Nissan
RD 28 TCIC is not available in the market.I have ordered the engine with the local scrap
importer who has promised to deliver the engine in last week of JAN or first week FEB.
In the mean time got the Peugeot engine completely overhauled.Parts replaced :-
1. Pistons - Menon.
2. Rings - Perfect circle.
3. Valves - Usha.
4. Main bearings - Clevite.
5. Big end bearings - Clevite.
6. Timing chain - Sachs.
7. Timing chain adjuster - Sachs.
8. Oil pump - Mahindra O E.
All the above parts including packing kit and head gasket were sourced from the Auth.
Mahindra Dealership. Will be mating the engine to an Isuzu 4wd gearbox.

Re: A new project: '04 Mahindra MM550

Thank you sir.The gasket was bought from the dealership i don't remember the name but in mechanic language it is called char cut wala gasket.I am using exactly the same parts which are available at the Dealership.Mahindra is in a habit of procuring parts from different vendors for e.g they use pistons by IPL,Goetze,Menon etc etc.My jeep came with Menon pistons,PC rings and Usha valves so That is why i have replaced these with the new parts by the same manufacturers.
Sir engine rebuild entirely depends on the parts and mechanic rebuilding the engine.Research even though time consuming saves a lot of cash.
