Hi Praveen,

Well, there would be lot more topless photos coming up, but for now.. I hope this should do?

Pic taken from one of our forest trips.

The thing is , I've been planning an elaborate photoshoot is a scenic location. But it never happens. Hopefully, in a couple of days, I'll be able to do it.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Somehow missed this thread! Congratulations, Dhanush.

A keralite (that too from Wayanad!) buying a Jeep from Mumbai! Jeeps are pricey down south, however this one is heights!

Will read your travelogue now

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

And, got the rear door and glass frame.

My glass frame was rusted and needed replacement. Also, got the rear door of 540. Initially I was thinking of going for the more good looking newer Major type door, but it turned out that it was really flimsy. So, I got the older 540 door itself.

Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540-resize-wizard3-copy.jpg

Cost of door (new) : 1500 Rupees
Cost of glassframe (new) : 2000 Rupees. With black powder coating.

Also, a funny thing happened last day when I was returning from Calicut. I lost my radiator cap. It just bounced off!!.. .. I cant digest this happening.. but then, I guess.. its a Jeep thing.. eh?

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Well its great dhanushs, the more of it must be coming .
My MM540 also needs the glass frame as its rusted and you are making me think of getting rid of the HT.
But I also have a 1986 4wd international (cj500d)jeep ,so i am having the impression that removing the softtop from cj500d would be more advisable as compared to removing the HT of the MM540,
As of now I am quite busy , the alterations and changes have to wait a month at least, till then i would love to feast and lust on the photos of your baby
regards

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Today, I fixed my door. But, just as expected, the spare could not be mounted on the door. The tyre wouldn't fit, and the material was too flimsy to bear the weight of the tyre. Hence, I'm on the process of fabricating separate bracket over the door to hold the weight.

Back Door Fitted:

This is the plan:

Plan in Action:

Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540-img_0013-copy.jpg
Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540-img_0015-copy.jpg

Will post the final result in the evening.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

dhanush,
one important point, add 2-3mm thick plates behind the door mounting hinges. that is usually the weakest part which makes doors rattle and get out of alignment.
what you have done is nice, practical, worth also. but do strengthen the hinges from the back side.
best regards.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Would have preferred the tyre as close to the hinge as possible.
How are you going to paint the inside of the 'double wall'?

Let me hope this take me to Kerala.

While in mumbai where did you get the work done? Was it at one place or different places.

Love the way Your 540 looks now.
Quite a daring effort to take a 1500kms journey on a 'new' jeep
Will be following your thread closely.

Thanks Shekaran for the advice. I'll post pics of what I've done.

Even I was planning to do that, but the tyre was fouling with the bumper. And to avoid it, I needed lengthen the height of the carrier, which was well, as bad as mounting in the center, and more difficult to work on.

I guess I'll have to figure it out somehow.

One of the by-products of little time and impulsive design.

Well, these are really simple works, which one can do of he got the time and tools. However, in any other case, a road side mechanic can carry out these for merely 200 bucks or so (greasing hubs extra).

Nothing can go wrong in engine oil, oil filter, air filter, and diesel filter change.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

OK, so got the spare fitted on the rear door.

Now, apart from the fact that I can now travel with peace of mind, and need not worry about punctures, the spare mounting has improved the looks a LOT!.

Check this out:

The brackets, that prevents the doors to bear the load:

Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540-resize-wizard2-copy.jpg

The handle position changed to accommodate the tyre. No holes were made. If at all, I'm moving for smaller more practical 235's I can get it changed back.

Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540-resize-wizard3-copy.jpg

I also installed a stopper, to stop the doors swinging all the way, as the stock stopper was not doing its work, and was biting into the body apart from the fact that it was also allowing the door to swing all the way and crash into the tail lights.

Welded a small door holder thingy, which will give additional support and prevent the door hanging. Now, I'm not sure if it will add to the rattles, but thought it would be preventive, as my design is not really well thought out.

Dhanush, why did you use this tailgate? Sorry to say, it is not properly mounted.

1st off, its not MM540's. I got the wrong one. I guess its CL500D's. I realized that after the purchase. . You can see the mounting holes in my Jeep lying unused, and I had to make new holes to mount this door.

Well, considering the current situation and time available, I couldn't go back, and get the real 540 door, so, used this. In any case, the cost of the entire set up is under 2k, so, thought of giving it a try.

Spike, is there much of a difference? Also, what would be the result (problems) in the long term.

I can see that, hence the query.

Tearing of tail gate near mountings. Even with OE type mountings it used to tear, but that was over a period of time.

I have foreseen that, and hence the support below the handle. Lets hope this set up lasts. The only real issue is the access/space in between the plate and the door.

I should have thought better. Anyhow.. ALL IZZ WELL in a Jeep, eh?
