Re: '93 MM540 - The adventure begins. EDIT : 4x4 conversion!

The conversion work is in progress. I understand the Main mechanic is yet to return from his 'Sabarimala' yatra and the progress is a bit slow!

Also planning to convert rear axle to Full Floating !

Thinking to Swap the Diesel TANK to below Co-driver seat. Not sure whether we can find the same from Shivajinagar Gujri ?
Few pictures for an update !

All the best on the conversion to 4x4. Please share some more details on the GB and TC combination you have used.
+1 for the FFRA conversion and it is in able hands of Santosh :-)

SVS,

What was the reason for choosing FFRA Over 550's axle ? Are you keeping the drum brakes on front ?

At the moment the drum brakes stay.
What are advantages of MM550? Wider track?

Track width is same 51" but the axle is different with the advantage of LSD.

Re: '93 MM540 - The adventure begins. EDIT : 4x4 conversion!

Following is a rough cost estimate of the cost
1. Front/Real Differential axles + TC = 26.5k
2. Flanges, hubs and other Misc etc ~ 5k

Also planning to shift the Fuel tank from Rear to the Front left under co-driver seat. as I understand need to find a CJ tank.

We could not find one in Shivajinagar Gujri any leads ??

I'm sorry for not replying earlier.

It's another standard MM540 here, with KMT90 + T18

Re: '93 MM540 - The adventure begins. EDIT : 4x4 conversion!

The Jeep is out from Hosur after the 4 X 4 conversion.

Thanks to SV Santosh, under whose guidance the conversion was accomplished. Another feather to SVS

Here it is the Version 2.0 of the Jeep. Now undergoing TEST... Hope everything goes well.

Re: '93 MM540 - The adventure begins. EDIT : 4x4 conversion!

Thanks to you I got to learn 2 rare things I have never supervised in a garage.

1) Engine rebuild (XDP4.90)
2) 2wd-4wd conversion.

My mech does sumo engines, indica, qualis, picup types on a regular basis... even a few XD3P's...

I can safely say I learnt a LOT in the conversion, I feel its too complicated and would any day advice buyers to search for the 4wd version from word GO!.

Your thorn areas were the hub spindles and GB Main shaft (4wd has a shorter one compared to 2wd GB). Finding the right part proved to be a challenge and tested your bro's patience, but finally got it done. FFRA decision was a surprise and thankfully that I had played around a lot in past so got it done with smoothly.

I still feel my mech charged a bit on the high side, but I dont have a reference point at bangy for such a job. Issue in this example was we didnt a remove-refit-go kit. Rear and front diffs were hollow and crown-pinion setting was a bigger chunk of the labor. But had we gone the full kit way, the parts bill would have been higher too, anyways, looking at overall picture, we werent more than 5% higher from any other such example.
