I think the best option for me is to try and get a used Safari alternator!

btw, it was a nice Good Morning today, with my Jeep featured in a full page of Malayala Manorama news paper.

Re: My Jeep Story Continues! Now, the MM540XD

Dhanush,

Another spoiler alert from me.

When I was at my wits end for a new/used alternator, I learnt a lot from mohang_j and some spare part sellers. The most expensive part IIRC inside a Alt is the rectifier (& not the diode, or cld be the reverse). Point is the spares of a safari alt is more than 5K each research with your local electrician and few electrical spares specialist (not your regular jeep spares shop) before going ahead.

PS PS - Now I remember - when I went in search for a new Alt (early 2013) I was quoted --- "READY for it" ---- 23,000 INR for a Brand new Safari ALT 120AH (Lucas TVS) from a Karnataka WHOLESALER and not the TASS.

Dhanush,

Saw the article and was very happy to see same....Great work and great going there at wayanad...Wishing you a successful event...I may not be able to join in this time.

120ah Bosch alternator is available by the authorized dealers(Philips) in Kottayam. If I remember correctly , I bought this one in Feb2013 for Rs.6500 something, with a one year warranty. The owner is a very honest and helpful chap. the one I got was the model which support power steering and power brake.

The one from TVS is close to 15k.

Hope this info helps...

Kind Regards...

Good snaps to show the articulation. Dhanush, is the jeep on 15s or 16s. Why I ask is I had the issue at BAOTR2013 using my gypsy tyres on my bros MM540. Some of the wall style rock obstacles the tyres found it difficult to climb. It was almost as if the vehicle was hitting against a wall. I was surprised because my jeep on 16s would have covered such obstacles with ease.

At the same time, on sand at the Palakkad OTR, the 15s performed very well.

Thanks..

Dear Dhanush - production alternator is good enough provided it is working properly. Obviously you will be keeping the engine running during winching. The best way is to equip the vehicle with two batteries in parallel (positive to positive connected and both negatives properly ground to the chassis). This increases the reserve capacity of your vehicle electrical system immensely.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

BD Sir, IMO it will work only when you have two identical batteries. Practically is it possible? Most of the time a week battery will drain the good one even if we get the identical ones initially. I don't think 40~A alternator can fully charge the 90~AH battery considering we do not drive our jeeps regularly. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Hi Vivek,

I've been running 265/70- R16 tyres.. Yes, the tyres hit my fender, even though I have a shackle lift. I guess I need body lift and fender cutting as well.

There are various methods of implementing dual battery set up. The simplest is just parallel them. The more sophisticated methods use isolators. Here are some methods

It was good learning for me.

One new thing I learnt is that in jumps, there is a chance of your fan hitting the radiator/shroud and breaking. (Please note that my body bush/bolt is not loose, weak and my engine mounting is not old/weak/loose.. and I have ample clearance between the fan and shroud and radiator)

Well, how do we prevent it?! Is electric fan the only option?

Re: My Jeep Story Continues! Now, the MM540XD

yes. it is ..

What is happening is that the relative up and down motion of the engine and the shroud are causing the issue
Happens mainly in army 550 as the radiator is more rigidly fitted to the chassis.

Re: My Jeep Story Continues! Now, the MM540XD

The time has come for me to get confused!!..

I have sold my AT tyres and 16 inch alloys. Will be going for 15 inch alloys and MT tyres.. BUT which ones?!!!..

I know its impossible to buy one tyre to suit all your off-road needs, but which tyre comes close?

I have noticed that in speed slush track, NDMS, MRF Super traction, or not-so-wide tyres with nice side lugs gives directional stability. In real slush, tyres with lugs on side walls work. In slippery rock, wide tyres does matter.

Wondering what tyres would give me a good package. I will need atleaat 10.5 width and 31" overall dia.

Any help/advice would be appreciated!
