I have no idea about the paint. It's suggested by fellow bhp'n Sreejesh. I'm planning to use it for underbelly and platform/firewall/body-sties. Will update here.

IMO, it might be similar to the rubber like compound mixed paint, which Ford uses on its underbody. If so, it'd be super effective.

Hi Dhanush,
If it is a rubber based paint (ex-3M underbody coat) do not use in places where Diesel can seep into. I Epoxy paint will be a better chiose if you are removing the old paint completely.

Its been a while since I have updated this thread. After the body work, the Jeep has done around 3000 kms since then. Also been to two OTR's. 16th Sep @ Bangalore, and 14th Oct @ Kakabe, Coorg.

So finally it has happened!!!... I have given my Jeep for painting!

I've been running around with a Jeep which has green doors, a blue tail gate, red side body and a black bonnet for a looonnngggg time!. lol!... People in my small town who know my Jeep somewhat say - That's the Jeep which goes around and climbs some crazy places.

Some other ones say, from which scrapyard did this guy bring this Jeep from! So, lets say I got fed up with the later group of people and decided to finally paint it!..

(psst: The real reason is that the primer was starting to wear off and rust creeping in)

Now, believe it or not, I've got a quote of 5k for the entire painting including the interiors from a friendly local garage. The deal is : I buy him all the raw materials and give him 500 bucks a day.

The first day, I bought him:

• 2 kg Metal Paste.
• 1 Kg NC Putty
• 1 Liter Thinner
• Different spec sand paper and water paper.

Now, the reason I'm going in for this paint job is that I have gained the basic understanding that, aesthetics is still nothing for a Jeep in purpose. I've seen a black Thar coming back from the kakkabe event (which was well, a very simple one) with full of scratches. So, whats the point in putting in Dupont on your Jeep when its gonna get scratched?

Lets see how this 5000 buck paint job turns out to be.

Metal paste in the long run, becomes the source for further rusting.

The paint will only be a temporary relief, rusting will continue (albeit slowly within), due to the commodity mentioned above. Good learning curve though.

The life expectancy of my body tub is 2-2.5 years max, after which, getting a new half body will be cost effective. Don't you think so?

I do not think your body tub is in that state, life depends on the usage, cleanliness, etc. I am not sure regarding the cost of body in second hand market, but if you get a decent one for a nominal price then it is worth picking it up, rather than tinkering the whole tub. The CJ clones are traditionally prone to rust, idea is to keep on prolonging the interval.

As a total outsider to the OTR thread, can I make a suggestion? Why do you want to paint the body? The photo from the Coorg OTR looks good. So after OTR you can wash the jeep and then paste the mud back on the vehicle - a bit like what the wild elephants do

That way your chassis is clean and the vehicle looks yummy!!!

Now, the child inside me always wants to run around with mud plastered all over.. but, you know what? When I come home, wifey will be waiting with a sweet smile on her face and a club at the back in her hand. And, she'll go 'clubbing' .

Jokes apart, what I've learnt with my Jeep is that, like spike above mentioned, rust is unavoidable. You'll have to do something or the other to delay it from eating up the body.

OK, so, its done, and here's how its turned out to be.










Total expense: 5,200 Rs. In case you are wondering how I spent this much money....


2 kg Metal Paste.
1 Kg NC Putty
1 Liter Thinner
Different spec sand paper and water paper. Cost me around 600-700 bucks.

1 Liter Amerton grey paint cost about 300 IIRC. 1.5 liter NC paint cost me 500 bucks. For underbody and misc stuff, I got 500ml NC enamel matt black, and 100ml of Aspa gloss. Cost me ~200 bucks. So, total paint expense is ~1000 bucks.

After the paint job, we decided to give it a coat of matt clear which costs ~650 bucks.

Add to that, 3 liters of thinner for paint and this and that and stuff ~400 bucks.

The painter took about 4-5 days. So, gave him ~2500 k + some of his expenses.

And, finally, just for the sake of it, a before and after comparo!

Looks great. I finally found my Jeep's twin! . Atleast the face. This paint looks good, will not hurt when you take it offroad and that's all that you want from a Jeep!

So what next?
