Re: Restoring an '84 Mahindra CJ 500D

The Jeep finally reached the garage today and on the first inspection the mechanic wants the following things to be arranged:
1. Fuel Pump. Original was CAV but it is not traceable and I need to have a replacement. Alternatively, he says we can have a MICO pump but that would need a few other things to be changed. Need help in sourcing the pump as the new MICO pump is being quoted for about 25000 INR.
2. Need new/old diesel filter assembly set.

Any idea about the prices and the availability please.

Well, there are service centres for CAV pumps also. Who only will try to sell you a distributor head (for mucho $$$), and bu**er up the pump some more.

Feel it will be better to source a complete engine with all accessories. Will work out much cheaper in the long run.

I take it your vehicle has a 3 speed GB?

Yes. It has a 3 speed GB. Right now I am trying to find something cheap so that the engine can at least be fired and its condition gauged. If it also needs extensive work then will ditch it and get the entire engine system or else if the engine is ok, will source a reasonably well pump.

While you are searching for a FIP, also be on the lookout for a complete engine, or engine GB combination.

Pls. chk out the diff ratio.

A good condition XDP 4.9 engine with Starting Motor, Alternator, Fuel Pump and all accessories will cost you ~12-15k. Sell your engine, and you'll get ~3-6k.

Assuming engine will be in OK condition, Pistons, Rings, Liners, Gaskets etc... new, will cost you ~5-6k and a Head work will cost ~3k, rebuild cost ~3k .

Total for ~25-30k you get a like new engine..

The original pump has been located and on the first look is in working condition. The driver confirmed that everything was working on the jeep till December 2011 when it was first jacked up. The only problem reported is a wider play in the steering box and nothing else. The pump has been sent to the workshop now. The present engine now has everything except the fuel pipes. which are also available but lets see, I might end up putting new ones if the threads are worn out on these old ones.

That's great news.
Any idea why it was taken off in the first place?

Presumably for safe keeping, it was mothballed. Though the real reasons are slightly more apparent but I tend to keep my faith.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

The mechanic also confirmed that the pump looks to be in working condition. Today the work has started on cleaning it up with diesel and compressed air. Further, the work has started in getting the hoses and pipes clamped onto the engine and the filter assembly. The idea is now to change all the oils and lubes and crank the engine to determine its condition. Further, course of action shall depend upon how the engine performs.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

The fuel pipes are playing tyrant. It seems the CAV pump requires Lucas type pipes which are not available locally. Pipes have been sourced from Guwahati and are expected to reach today around 1500. Slowly it is dawning on me what it meant that Jeeps are built!

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Was going through the paint history of the original willys. It seems Mahindra continued with the same colour palates. My jeep has original paint and according to the paint card it can either be foam green or jade tint. Attaching an original paint shade card I found on the internet. Courtesy the cj3b info page.

Would Gypsy 410 narrow track wheel rims fit this Jeep?

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Hi Wanderer,

The VIN Tag says that's a CJ500 with a XDP4.9 hence CJ500 "DP", and its a 101 Wheel Base and a 3 Speed T-90 Gearbox.

These were some of the earliest Mahindra's to be fitted with the XDP4.9 (2112cc) Diesel engine.

Regards,

Arka

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Right now the FI pipes are proving to be a real bother. The ones sent from Guwahati on Saturday turned out to be for the DI engine and have to be replaced with the ones for the Pugeot engine. Hope they get the correct pipes today evening. What pcd are these wheels? If I have to change the rims which vehicle can be the donor?
