re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

@WN. Was off the grid for sometime.
You mean to say the switch failed EVEN AFTER you fitted a heater relay?

Yes Sir, it did. It wont turn even to the first position. I shall turn to the truck solution if the present system fails again. But for now we are having fun and enjoying the jeep, becoming the daily driver almost, with extended trips on weekends. A few pictures from the Sunday outing of about 150 kms to see another petrol swb jeep which is for sale.

Dear Wanderernomad - there are lots of non-standard things done to the petrol vehicle including CNG kit. Be careful, don't rush, please take detailed photographs and post them, I will guide you.

Best regards,

That would make it a mechanical problem/ failure in a electromechanical device! With us climbing up the wrong tree.

Both your switches had the same failure?

If the (proper) relay is already in place, and (properly) wired, all you need to do is to source an ignition switch from pre steering lock days (as in Ambassadors and Fiats, and petrol Jeeps!), and a simple pushbutton switch.

Will be off the grid again for a couple of days. If you feel like it, please PM me your email address. (Spotty 2G connection not conducive to web browsing. Have to check/ reply to EMail out of professional necessity.)

Infact all my 6 odd switches suffered from the same mechanical failure. Now I dissected 2 of them and know the inside workings. Next time i shall go in for the solution as suggested by you and Dabhar sir.

Ok maybe an overkill but have added the sand ladders/recovery tracks to the jeep. They have been mounted through a bolt with a bracket to the rear bull bar. The camo net shall be added and the recovery tracks shall be outside the net. Here are a few pictures.

Wonder whether these switches are 'reconditioned'.

Dont know but sure looked as new. They were nicely wrapped and in a cardboard box. 5 of them were Minda and had Mahindra stamped on the key, one was a cheap local one hastily sourced.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Yesterday came back from a 11 day 2300 km trip across Mizoram and some parts of Burma. No I didnot take the jeep but took my Marina. However, the jeep was lying idle for about 15 days and wont start last evening when i returned. I took the battery for a recharge. Fixed the battery again after charging and still it wont start. The starter cranks the fan starts to move slowly and then the engine doesnt fire. There is a strange whirring kind of noise from the Heater Relay. At times when I crank, the ammeter needle dances between the (-) and 0 signage with a clicking sound. Now am confused.

^^^
Battery/ terminal/ or cable problem. Measure to find out source of problem.
(Assuming that the starter motor (not solenoid) has not developed a fault while lying idle for two weeks.)
The heater relay is chattering:- voltage dropping below its cutin/ holding voltage.

The culprit was the battery only. It seems the guy did not charge the battery properly or maybe did not even charge it. The jeep was started using another battery and it started just fine.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Towed my trailer for the first time today. It towed true and nothing wayward except I just cannot reverse it straight. So am driving in a straight line. The trailer tow picture and also the concept that am looking to modify it are as follows. Ultimately the trailer will be converted into a camping trailer with under bed storage.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Guys need advise on how to close the front end. Thinking of using the rear for entry exit and use a combination of hard and soft front sides. Something that will stand upright bolted to provide a closed environment on the move but which shall get folded down with cloth/canvas sides when deployed. Something like the front end of the tent in the following picture.

re: A Mahindra CJ500 DP and a custom made Expedition Trailer

Guys your suggestions for insulating the FRP top from within. Am thinking of using the soft black theromocool sheet that is generally used to give a cushioning effect or for packing goods. Will it be enough to insulate the interiors from becoming too cold at night or too warm during the day?.
