Mercedes G500 4x4² with portal axles!

Mercedes decided that the current G500 wasn't good enough so they decided to make G500 4x4² .

So what did they do,

- Added the 4.0L V8 Biturbo from the AMG GT ( modified, of course) to deliver 422 horses, 450 pound feet torque
- Increased the track width to 1774 mm (from 1475mm)
- Added the Portal Axles from the 6x6
- Upgraded the tyres to 325/55 R22
- Carbon Fibre Wheel Arches
- Added Dual Spring/Damper Struts for two modes : Comfort and Sport
- Switching time between modes : 15 milliseconds
- Three Differential Locks ( because 2 weren't enough)
The vehicle will be presented during the Geneva Motor Show.

Regarding the production , following is an excerpt from the official Press Release

Quote:
Whether and when the decision on series production of the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4x4² will be made depends on the reaction which the near-series show car receives

A small comparison based on the figures in the Press Release, Added the %age increase just to highlight the madness

re: Mercedes G500 4x4² with portal axles!

Those axles take ground clearance to 450 mm! That's every offroader's dream.

Here's two videos of the beast in action:

I hope this does make it to production. Apparently, Mercedes is 'encouraged' by sales of the very niche 6x6. If you haven't seen this awesome video, do it now:

450 mm, you mean

This is the first time I've heard of portal axles, but wow, what a simple and elegant concept!

Re: Mercedes G500 4x4² with portal axles!

Has anyone noticed that the car has two different sets of tyres/wheels on it?
One of them is the AMG style rim and the other is the 6x6 style rim.

So one for the tarmac and one for off-road? The tarmac would most certainly be horrible off-road and defeat the whole purpose of a car such as this.

Don't know the effect of the off-road tyres on the tarmac. What is the worst that could happen? Apart from insane tyre noise.

Not a simple concept, but, really does solve the problem of having heavy duty drive train to transfer the torque to the wheels.

Re: Mercedes G500 4x4² with portal axles!

Portal Axles as a method of increasing the ground clearance and also the final drive ratio is the best and most effective provided we increase the track width corresponding to the increase in the overall height.

Also,

There should be a clear understanding that such modifications should be meant for vehicles that are going to be used majorly for off-road use because with the increase in the height of center of gravity the on-road dynamics of the vehicles are compromised.

Having said that, this is an that idea i believe is worth trying out.

Re: Mercedes G500 4x4² with portal axles!

After the Delhi Auto Expo, the next stop for the G500 4X4 is Mumbai. However, not for a customer, only Media Drives.

This car looks so intimidating in person, that you have to watch it to believe its size. Here is one picture that I took at the Delhi Auto Expo, the humans look so tiny in comparison to this beast

The third pic should give you an idea of what happens when you eat your vegetables (on left is is Brabus modded Merc Gwagen & Right is Brabus modded Merc Gwagen 4x4²)
