Hi, how do you think a coil spring is more suitable.
Coil spring does have its advantages, but, I'm.still not convinced. Hence asked

Re: The Jeep - MM540XD Transformed!

I may be wrong , I feel coil springs offer more articulation than a spring leaf setup. Spring leaf are used for load bearing purpose. For example Toyota Landcruiser LC70 pickup comes with a solid axle coil spring in the front and leaf spring in rear. Coil spring also offers more comfort than a leaf spring. But considering the economics and availability, leaf spring have an edge though.
IIRC majority of RFC vehicles use coil overs right?.

Well, if you use long travel imported coilovers (damn expensive) or shocks, and get your geometry spot on, may be coil springs are better, but, right now, with the stuff available here in India, getting a coil spring right is pretty daunting. The problem is in low speeds its OK, but the vehicle will become completely undrivable offroad. I'm not yet ready to transport my Jeep in trucks, but, once I'm ready, may be coil springs.

Correct. But, last RFC, I never saw a definite advantage. Except for maybe the fact that you can get a 90 degree approach angle. Well, I'm starting a detailed thread on this topic. Hoping we can discuss more there.

Also on the above, think you should add a word of caution for people who might want to emulate your build without understanding its implications.

Hi Sutripta,

Had cable brakes on the single cylinder drum. But, didnt work out properly. Had problems frequently. Right now, evolved to the ball valve handbrakes.

That does not make it a "handbrake".

Re: The Jeep - MM540XD Transformed!

- 19 spline Lock Rite Automatic Differential lockers
Have you installed it in front or rear?
cost?
Why did you go for automatic locker than a selectable locker?

- Which has more advantage, locker used in front or rear? I see mixed review so.

- Why did you go for 33" tires wouldn't 31" do the duty?
wouldn't the articulation be less the more you increase the size of tire.

- which is better Maxxis bighorns vs Maxxis m/t bighorn 764 for both off/on road application.
Or any other brand which you suggest?

- Can you post some pictures of Engine sump guard, raised fuel tank, gearbox and transfer case guard.

And all readings on highway drives. In City, I guess it gives very good mileage. But not checked yet
Sure. Will post more details. Just waiting if someone asks any specific details in the listed spec, so that I can start with it.
Seems like an awesome machine from the set up perspective. Also, being a 4 forward speed gearbox, I think it would be better to use this machine where it belongs - in 4X4 territory. Truly inspirational dedication to turn this jeep into awesomeness.

Lockers are on the rear.

I got it from the US, by hand. Hence it was IIRC ~350 USD. At the time with ~50 bucks a dollar, it was ~20k INR

Well, reliable selectable lockers were damn expensive at that time. Now you have lambda lockers. Most of the time, especially in competitions, a selctable locker has an advantage, that you can turn it off (eg: 180 degree slushy turn). However, automatic locker is absolutely fuss free. Over the last two three years, I've just forgotten that they've been fit.
Quote:

Ideally you need have lockers both in the front and the rear. However, if you decide to fit only one then I'd suggest rear, mainly because a Jeep with front lockers is difficult to turn. In slush, it just goes forward. Wont turn. Also, on stock Mahindra front axles, the locker wont work. The axle will brake.

Nope, I think the bigger the tyre the better. With 33's I get more clearance, and also with 12.5 width I get more contact patch. Right now, planning to upgrade to 35 x 12.5 x 15 Creepy Crawler.
Quote:

Yes, because the tyre touches the body. You can cut the body to prevent it. I have cut so much, and , I think my vehicle articulates really well, and that too without SPOA. Only imported coil over vehicles with huge travel are better.

I have used both 764 and 762. I have found the 762's to be better offroad. However, 764's have better braking on road.

MT's are highly terrain specific. Meaning, you need Silverstone Xtreme tyres on mud. But, those dont work on sand or loose soil or rock. When the bighorns work superbly on Sand, wont work much in slush.

If you are really serious about offroading, then, I think Maxxis Trepedor Competition Edition tyres work well in most situations. The only problem is they come only in 37" and 40" sizes. However, I'm planning to upgrade to creepy crawlers, since I think they are the 2nd best option, and they come in 35 x 15 inchers.

But, if you want overall balance. Then the 762's are the best. You can also look for Yokohoma Geolander MT's they are very good.

Re: The Jeep - MM540XD Transformed!

Hello People,

A minor upgrade for the Jeep. I have fit individual cable fiddle brakes for the rear. It should help in turns.

This is the intended result. Let me see how it works out.
