Help !! Restoring a Ford GPW 1944 in Bangalore

Need advice on restoration of a GPW 1944. Here is what has happened thus far

- the jeep was in working condition about 7 years ago
- recently gave it to a mechanic named Shankar near Bannerghatta road.
- The jeep has been disassembled, parts have been cleaned and we have repainted the exterior
- The mechanic sat on it for a good 1.5 years and I finally had to get all the parts back. Its now sitting in the garage at home

Need a good mechanic who can reassemble, fire up the engine, finish the electricals and get this up and running.

Very particular that we restore with all original parts.

Please point me to good mechanics in Bangalore who can take this on. Live near IIM Bangalore, but, open to any location in Bangalore

Regards
Jaggi

Do you still have the side valve or it is dieselised.?

I know Shankar from quite some time and i do not think he is well equipped for a full-fledged restoration.

Re: Restoring my Ford GPW Jeep

I am not a jeep expert and neither do i own one. My advise would be to check if possible with KVCC ( Karnataka Vintage car club) on advise for some good mechanics with working knowledge on Jeeps, especially the original petrol engine ones.

https://www.kvccc.in/

Its never easy to restore a vintage vehicle especially for the first time. Time, money and patience is needed in unlimited quantities .

All the best.

After restoring GPW, Willys CJ3B, Kaiser CJ5 and few vintage bikes, i have realized that if you dont have spare time to monitor/supervise restoration process, give to restoration expert. You may spend extra but its worth.
These Jeeps may look simple for a novice but each model has their own bodyline, accessory and other specifics which a normal Jeep mechanic is not aware of. Just to give you example: size and type of nut bolts used to fix seats or degree and shape of hump around gearbox.
I got restored 2 Jeeps from Bhopal and currently GPW and a bantam trailer is being restored there. These mechanics have spent their entire life working on these jeeps.
I will suggest to send your Jeep to Hyderabad which is another Jeep Mecca in India.
Regards,
Shubhendra

Re: Restoring my Ford GPW Jeep

Who was that fellow from a few years back who was the absolute expert on very old, WWII, jeeps? He might be quite old now...name started with a "U"? He might be the guy to contact on the restore of an old jeep, if he is still around.
