Its been sometime I was thinking to do something different and challenging, so the crazy thought made me to do a jeep with IFS and IRS. Now every jeep in track especially in kerala is with fiddle-brake/cutting-brake for faster turns but it is not easy for me to do both like turning steering and meantime pressing switches for fiddle break so thought implementing rear steer, rear-steer with solid Axle is easy to do but as the jeep is for speed tracks the handling side will be in toss.

So thought about rear IFS and searched Google and you tube and found the real Outlaw the ifs IFS rock-bouncer buggy, then the planning started and was searching for parts cheap and best. In case of IFS we have only option in shelf that's Thar crde ifs diffs, which is DANA 30 and small and light weight, got one set from our member Swastik Vijay. Had discussions with our former member Sudarshan Bhai and Vijayananda prabhu, who were always helpful to all my ideas.

Explained me the drawbacks and places where to take care while design and build. Now the build begins... feedback welcome.

Interesting. A few queries:

How will you do the rear steering setup?

How much degree of turn will you keep for the rear steering?

Will you have an option to disconnect rear steering in case you are doing a big degree of turning in the rear - because it would be very dangerous on the road at high speeds with a slight twitch.

Your original centre Dif (pumpkin) was centred or offset - front and rear?

This is the basic plan for rear steer and not for road use only for offroad track. it's left offset. Rear steer disengage mechanism desighn is not yet ready but definitely adding it.

This gets twitchy fast. I would want:

1.) The front and rear wheels to work parallel to each other.

2.) The front and rear wheels to work counter to each other, e.g. point the front wheels to the left and point the rear wheels to the right.

3.) The rear wheels locked straight parallel to the chasis so as to follow the front as in normal operation.

I might seriously consider a center differential.

I think I might simply have two steering wheels and power linkages and work from there.

I think I might just buy a Jimny and forget it.

Some more questions come to mind:

Are you using power steering? If yes you would need a bigger unit. That means engine power gets used. what engine are you running?

How are you engineering the disconnect with the PS system?

How will you make sure your reconnect happens perfectly? Even a single tooth misalignment on the gear sprocket would throw everything off alignment.

I am using scorpio's and bolero's rack and pinion steering with two PPs. It doesn't need bigger unit but should be enough to turn a 30" tyre + vehicle as my vehicle is with a custom made / modified Marshal NGCS chassis with customized wheel base . I am using SD25 with rotary FP and turbocharger with intercooler.

The front and rear steer disconnect system is bit complicated because it's mechanical link. With huydrolic ram it's more easy to disconnect and allighn center with the help of sensors. But in this case I am working on a simple mechanism to do the job, the lesser the Toth means the lesser the chance of misalignment but engaging is little difficult but possible.



This gearbox I made to fit the pitman arm backwards, with a 1:2 ratio for better steering response on a MM MRCBT PS Box.

Fabricated hanging brackets for front dana 30 diff by using truck leaf spring clamps, easily available cheap and strong . It saves time and headache of bending.



Aligned the diff and did proper cut on brackets to fit on to chassis and the dana 30 diffs.



Today will weld it and do the same on rear diff and hopefully will finish hanging the diffs .

Today's update.

We positioned and aligned the front and rear diffs then spot welded the brackets will add support to the brackets to strengthen them. Cross checked the measurements, yes it's 81" wheel base.

Today we fit the front diff back and finding proper alignment and position for front lower and upper arm mounts, while thinking about the mounting brackets saw the mm pik-up leaf spring perch and decided to use them its simple and and easy to fix rather than fabricating mounts .



Ran to the parts shop and bought , ngcs / mm pik-up front leaf set front and rear perches with silent block bush.

Inserted the bushes in to mount.


Fit those perches on to lower arm and fit it back for checking again




Sit back and visualized t the travel and positioning of lower and upper arms without springs . Decided to go ahead by placing the axles parallel to chassis / straight to diff.

Lowered the chassis and rearranged lower arm and upper arm positions.



Now the confusion started on which type suspension to use strut type or simple coil spring ��.

The strut shocks I have is from fortuner which is having only 5" travel so I think that's not enough for the effort taking to build this.

I have a pajero rear shock in shelf and a set of invader springs too. That combination will give a total travel of 7.5" which is enough for the use of this particular vehicle.

Today we finished with right side lower arm setting and positioning the upper arm.

From yesterday I was thinking how to make a mounting bracket for lower arm but no luck nothing came on mind , but morning 6.30 I came and looking at the available parts and fount the removed front portion of the chassis itself and re shaped it to mount the lower arm bracket.



Don't had the patience to wait for fabricator so I did it,its easy to me because the drawing is in my mind .




Aligned the wheel and lower arm according to the lift hight of a 15" from ground to lower part of pumpkin .

Old school tools , two spirit levels and one weight.




Spot welded the lower arm mounts and checked the working .





Lower arm rear mount also made from the balance cut pice of chassis 😉



Did a discution with Vijayettan (Vijayanada Prabu) and he explained clearly about the strut shock working and how important it is on a IFS system so decided to go ahead with fortuner strut with bolero springs.

Today we repositioned the upper arm mounts for getting positive camber .



Moved upper arm backwards for getting space to mount strut shocks.




Used Jeep CJ series leaf spring mounts as strut lower mount.



Positioned the shocks and tied.



Fabricated upper mount for strut and springs .






Now need to fabricate a strut bar and cut and modify springs according to the fortuner strut spring bracket.
