Why just 7J,Samurai? Why not wider?
I know of one jeep here that runs on 10J rims.

That is because I am planning to stick with current 235mm tyres. Not really into baloon tyres.

First real offroading after the major repairs to the Engine/gearbox/cooling-system happened on this saturday. I went on a recce in hilly forest route. It involved numerous 20-35 degree climbs on slippery (dry leafs) trails, I must say nearly 10Kms of trail was covered. For the first time I really understood the offroad prowess of CJ340. It handled every bit of terrain so effortlessly carrying 4 adults, it left me speechless, well almost. Recce report will come later.

When I did continous hill climb in 3 low for 30-40 minutes, the temp guage went up till 85C, nothing more. On smooth roads, it rides very smoothly like a car, in bumpy roads it feels like riding a horse. I am just praying that Kerala roads are smooth, that will makes the 600Kms Munnar drive easier. In total I did 220Kms on Saturday after recce of two possible OTR spots.

Two significant changes in the following photograph taken after the first recce. Now it has brand new windshield frame (old one was rusted badly) which I got for 3K. And now the Jeep has KA plates, spent almost 20K to achieve that one, not that it helps even a wee bit in offroading.

Hmm... Why? Do you think the current Apollo Storm is not up to the task? Did you take a closer look at those tyres at full size?

May be a nice set of alloys will complement the jeep. The 340 has really come a long way. I have been reading this thread right from the beginning, and you really are having an amazing journey with the jeep

Hi Sharat, Yeah I just did take a close look. IMO if there is slush, then these tyres will fail as the sipes are very narrow. The edges are OK, but once blocked they may fail the purpose of a slush incline crossing or similar.

Now that your jeep has been rebuilt to almost perfection, the only thing that may make it fail to perform is the tyres, all other things remaining constant.

You can say that about any AT tyre, switching to another AT tyre won't fix it. Meanwhile I am giving a hard look at Maxxis mud tyres on Shahnawaz's Gypsy.

I had given the Jeep for final checkup (before Munnar OTR) and for mounting new alloy rims and bolts.

Problems found:
1) Three of the brake drums had jammed pistons. This was discovered when the drum was open for putting new bolts. Replaced the kit in all three.
2) The steering box was loose, practically coming off.
3) The spare tyre had a puncture.
4) One of the tyre needed 220gms of weight to balance it. Doesn't say much about the quality of Apollo Storm.

The new alloy rims:

Model: Plati
Size: 15x7.5J
Offset: 0
Center bore: 110
PCD: 139.7mm
Weight: 5KGs

Old steel rims were 9KGs and 15x6J and rusted inside.
