Hey Arka, Go Man Go!
Hope that I get to drive it during my next Chennai visit.

Its registered as a private vehicle(white board). So, the Light-Motor-vehicle license is good enough.

The comparison pics I cant wait to see. How about putting a 800 on the other side of the 4W73 just for garnish?

even if its a white board, I dont think this comes under LMV. this is clearly a HMV.

Not that Arka would not be able to handle our Chennai Maamas. He will give them so much specs of the vehicle and sell the idea that this is a LMV.

Maybe show them the comparative (photoshoped) pics with the safari -

@ironwolf- I was not kidding, it does look only a little bigger than the safari. we shall wait for the comparison pics with the tata.

but like I said- definitely looks scarier than anything else on the road.

Yeah, it's not THAT big but it is a little heavy. This makes me wonder if a HINO 110bhp will leave this vehicle a little under powered. If HINO is the answer then maybe a bigger HINO is a better answer? Ashok-Leyland uses some HINO engines. Which ones I do not know. HINO itself is supposedly going to open an assembly plant in India by the end of the year. Maybe this will gives us all some more options as to what diesels we can use. (HINO = the Toyota truck branch)

A 4-tonne Tata 407 is classified as an LCV or a Light Commercial Vehicle.

This is lighter still and is not commercial. So perhaps he can get away with LMV though I'm sure the cops will always see this vehicle as a potential milch cow.

Should not. 110 bhp is what bigger trucks (the 10 tonners included ) are powered by.

Arka, have I missed the torque numbers ? If not, pls post that here.

4W73 - Engine Options

1) Nissan P40 Petrol Engine

Weight - 295Kgs
Torque - 26-28Kgm @2000rpm
BHP - 125-128 @ 4000rpm

2)Hino W04D aka Ashok Leyland H4D

Weight - 345Kgs
Torque - 28.5Kgm@1800rpm
BHP - 110@3200Rpm

The W04D is suitable for vehicles with 3.5 Ton Payloads.
Also the Nissan 4W73 gear Ratios are similar to the AL 709 (H4D & H4TCI)

Arka, from the engine specs..the diesel engine is heavier by a good 50 Kgs..so maybe you SHOULD stick to the petrol engine and do that diesel conversion into some other vehicle. This vehicle will be a novelty if kept in PETROL, else yours will be compared with the police tow trucks..

Also, the petrol is a 6 cylinder one. What about the diesel?

You have a good 540 for a daily drive. Else play with your petrol 3B, leave this in stock form. We could always tune to get more mileage..say 5 or 6 kpl from the same engine. The mm540 with AC will be good for a daily drive..well i dont need to tell you about jeeps, especially a 540!

Am now eager to drag after our last session..looking forward for the weekend!

Looks Good to me. Either option will give you loads of torque at normal, operating RPM's - even in city traffic.
