1972' Land Rover SIII half ton lightweight

This rare model of land rover was a result of British Army's demand for Air portable vehicle during mid sixties. The lightest land rover available at that time was SIIa 88' which weighted about 2 tons. It was stripped down by removing as many non-essential items and reducing others to give the Series IIA Lightweight. This process included dispensing with the front bumper and the spare tyre. Parts of the body, the doors, and windscreen were replaced with simpler, easy to remove items. The most major change was a reduction in width, which meant it would fit on a standard pallet but requiring shorter axles.
Complete, the Lightweight IIA weighed 1202 kg, over the specified weight. With the removable body panels taken off it was below the limit. Ministry of Defence accepted.

Series IIA production began in 1968. The Series IIA Lightweight was replaced by the Series III Lightweight in 1972 matching the replacement of the civilian IIA with the III. The most notable change being the move of the headlights from the grill to the wings in line with new automotive lighting regs.

The following LR, I guess is the only surviving Light Weight in the country in stock form with everything original.

Enjoy the images...
As they say 75% of LR that left solihull are still on road. and also the very first vehicle seen by 1/3rd of world's population is a Land Rover.

Isn't the 90 the SWB. The LWB are the 110 and the 130 right? My partner owns a regularly used 110. I use it fairly often too.

yeah! it comes with difflocks on all four wheel. yellow gear lever, you have to press downward. but its not on the fly like modern borg warner type. To switch off difflock you have to switch red lever backward, the yellow will pop-up, and you can switch the red back to forward (high).

'88 and 90 are SW

Excuse my ignorance but I thought the new 110 came in both swb and lwb? What series is the Defender, is that not a 110?

A lot of us have heard and so much about Landrovers. Perhaps you could give us a short history of the marque with different models and important technical improvements. Coupled with pictures of your car it would make for great reading

defender also comes in 90 and 110, and very rare 130 configuration.

i am trying my best to compile. With indefinte strike in darjeeling, i am spending my vacation this way.
Until then you can read Land Rover FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions - Home. Its one of the best site on LR.

There are but very few are in original state. SWB has mahindra engine, LWB has mazda or nissan dijal.

There is a place called manebhanjyang, my folks told that its full of genuine landy, planning to visit next week, if strike breaks.

One family friend has '54in white. and one more has defender 90 in army green. Will try to catch them if time permits.

Series III Lightweight

Hello SirAlec,

Very nice LR Lightweight, and very well maintained.

You can try the Solex M34PBIC for the 2.2L petrol engine.

I think the Yellow lever is for the Low Ratio in the Transfer Case, as
a) Centre Differential Locks were introduced in Range Rover first is 1970.

b) Axle Differential Locks were introduced in the Defenders in c1999

Regards,

Arka
