in karnataka, i think coorg and chikkamagalur (w.ghats) areas have the highest concentration of jeeps. there are LOTS of reputed jeep mechanics and workshops in these areas. it would be nice for someone to scout around + make a holiday of these places.

although i've heard of the north karnataka jeep market (bellary etc.), i'm not aware of it. also, i've noticed quite a few jeeps in the coastal areas like mangalore, karwar etc.

in bangalore, i faintly remember someone mention that there's a jeep workshop near whitefield area, who's quite famous. anyone aware of this place ? are there any others in bangalore worth visiting ?!

there's one jeep in a workshop near my house (RMV 2nd stage), which has a registration of MYH or something like that. i stopped and asked the garage owner if it was on sale. he said the owner will sell for 1.25L. the jeep is a petrol 'high bonnet' with no 'mahindra' or 'willys' markings on it. the engine is currently down, and the mech says hes overhauling the same, and it will be good for 1L kms after that. the body seemed to be in very good shape. i'll try and take pictures of the same today. if someone's interested, i can pursue this deal. mods, sorry if this a lil OT, but i'll start a new thread once i get the pics.

The jeeps are good and clean. They would be my choice without the stickers and with 4x4. Not withstanding, the fact remains that these are in demand! Peole are willing to spend to a tune of 3L for such jeeps.

I was told that the engines are also one of the factors which decicde the price of the jeep; some of the vehicles had previously used overhauled engines and other had new.
One of the dealer told me that they have put a Qualis engine inside.

The tyres do provide a good grip! Infact with such tyres only, the need for power steering arises.

The red one with low profile tyres is pretty cool actually. It looks vintage with those mirrors and windshield if you not look at the alloys...

this one was purchased yesterday by my friend from dabwali. Must say that the ride, although comfortable (perhaps due to the tyres) still left a lot to be desired. Not sure if I would wanna spend above 2K for this or maybe I would but on a custom note.
Here are the specifications
1. Engine - Toyota
2. PS - Maruti Zen
3. Tyres - Maxxis

No handbrake and like always, no 4wd

That looks like a neat jeep. But I wonder how reliable these dabwali jeeps are once they are put to some serious off roading. BTW how much did your friend pay for it ?

my friend paid a little over 2L for this with the little over amount being the contributing factor to those tyres.

We did put it through some slush, which is a gimmick for offroading but the drive from dabwali to delhi plus flooring the damn thing, it held together quite well. The engine sounded smooth and the turbo whistle was good. the only discerns to me was the handling and all the slush the fell on the clothes. The rear of the jeep twitches while goin through jumps and bumps.

What are these offroad M/T tyres doing on this 4X2 jeep?

How can this jeep be comfortable with these tyres which are designed to perform off the road?

the whole thing!

the jeep minus some of the things and add few of mine.

the bolero tail lights dont go with the rear!

it will be a disappointment if it has square head-lights!

too many fog lamps on the front bumper!

i want to see how the soft top is!

cheers:

Are you referring only to the steering wheel? I feel the Zen came with only a EPS which will cannot be fitted on to the Jeep.
Experts, could you kindly comment on this?

Why no handbrake?

IMHO a jeep without a 4WD is not a jeep at all.
Although it is obvious that these are just show vehicles, modified to pamper the macho ego of many a person who buys these things, the Jeep looses its soul somewhere between its conversion to a 4X2.
I hope these are not front wheel drives please!!
