Renamo, can you please put the scanned copy of the article published in magazine so that it can be clear news and others can read the same and enjoy the news and dream about the JEEP in future.

I would have liked to see Mahindra acquire the Jeep brand. I don't see why Tata's would consider Jeep when they have LR now

PS Come to think of it sometimes its more a question of market spread and brand equity. Jeep is well established in North America and that is one of the world's largest markets. LR never really got a strong foothold there. Neither does Fiat. So I guess Tata's need an American brand to move in there. I guess if the Tata's are planning to become a global player in the coming decade they need brands that give them strong reach into all markets.

I personally don't think Tata's are acquiring brands to bring into India. Its more to reach out and go global. Cars trickling into India is more a spinoff of grand plans to go global.

The way they have been aligning with Fiat I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually merge.

I would say that is a very brave statement. However - to each his own.

Sorry, don't have a scanner, but I can provide details of the news/mag. Mag: Car India, Aug 2008 Page no: 48 Section: We Hear.. Title: Tata to drive the jeep: Tata motors is now in talks with Chrysler for selling their Jeep wrangler SUV in India through select delearships. If the deal progresses further, the SUV may also be sold in other Asian markets like indonesia and Malaysia. The Wrangler is by far Chrysler's best selling model and its introduction to other developing markets through Tata's strong dealer network should help the brand further. @DKG, they have not mentioned anything abt buying the brand at all. Just bringing it.

If jeep wranglers land in TATA showrooms then they would have two worlds most 4x4 iconic brands in their portfolio (landrover included). What is Mahindra doing??? Will i have to go to a TATA showroom if i have to buy my next 4x4?

Also what happened to Mahindra talks to get Hummer brand? Any idea of the progress?

Latest news in the US is that Anand Mahindra is no longer interested in Hummer.

Whats up, Arka - nobody other than M&M should make 4WDs? Live and let live - let them also make some money, even if they sell 'substandard' offroad products and their buyers are not "educated" enough in such matters.

Of course, the MM540 with its Ssangyong body, Kia gearbox and Peugeot tractor engine on WW2 chassis and suspension will always be better than the original thing.

Not at all, but we wouldn't want JEEPs to have a Off-Road reputation of a Tata Safari.

BTW - Peugeot Diesels are Car Engines.

Which car, exactly?

You might want to check this out: Peugeot Marine Engine Manuals

No offense to the engine - it is a very competent workhorse, but it was more commonly used in fishing boats and generators.

Not a tractor engine

I think you are confused between the International DI (tractor) engine , which was used on some MM Jeeps, as compared to the relatively newer Peugeot diesel engines (which are not tractor engines, and have been used on some of the older model cars from Peugeot)

Of course, the newer diesel engines (used in cars) from Peugeot are much more refined. I have travelled in Peugeot taxis in Europe, and had to ask the driver if it is was petrol-engined or diesel, since the NVH level was very low. I was surprised when he said "diesel, of course"

.

This is still speculation but hope it does happen. We might see the possibility of a locally made Wrangler.
