What about the New Ford Endeavor?
Also A Tata TL 4x4 with a 3.0L DICOR engine would qualify.

3 Years Back, Tatas were testing special Sumo's 4x4, for strict off road use, I saw them testing in the pawna/mulshi areas. The cars were solid with special uncomplicated suspension, soft tops, offroad tires etc. anyone has any idea on this project?

Used by the army. The car looks very very purposeful.

hey zaphod i have also been on the sangla-chitkul-kaza-chandertal-leh twice in last two years and once kaza and back from manali since my uncle got the nissan x trail.(he has also been there in Tata Sierra). But doing that on public transport .thought the xtrail to be an suv and an offroader but turned out to be just too soft.but yes it does its job. have our own tent so camped too.

The perfect offroader is the land rover with the spare tyre on the bonnet and the silencer near the pillar.
Nissan patrol is built like a tank so thatz the perfect offroader.I know one person whose is for sale looks just new from outside.
In your case the Safari would do just fine.easy on the spares and i dont think there are many places where it cannot go.its just a bit long.Since you do not need any of those features the ad displays 6.4 lac .
The army sumo i dont know if any of those would be on sale but that looks perfect.

i think only Gypsy,Gurkha and CJ are the real offroaders, with Endeavour and Vitara you cant even think of doing what these machines can do, only advantage on Gypsy is, its really light so there very less chances of getting stuck and less NVH.
Saw the pics on Gurkha, I am in love with the new Gurkha with intake pipe.

Check this out for 4*4 in action.

Hey guys

Gurkha is out there in limited numbers contact the people now, the only thing is they are small in numbers and using TD2450 engine, gone are the days of OM616.

If you can wait a bit longer you can lay your hands on OM611 engine, they shud be out next year by July. At the moment they are busy exporting these vehicles to Israel and Germany.

Mahindra Axe shud be another gud vehicle for power freaks, heard it wud be producing something in tune of 300+ bhp and yes guys do not even think of fitting a CNG to tht one LOL

Nissan Patrol P60 aka JONGA

Hi Guys,
The Indian Army JONGA is the 1960 Nissan Patrol with a 3956cc 6cyl petrol engine.

In 1963 the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur was established to manufacture under license the Nissan Patrol P/G/Y/L60 in India.

The 1952 Nissan Patrol -http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/3823/pretruck.html

Regards,

Arka

To be a real 4x4 with off-roading ability, a SUV should have full-time or partial 4WD with low gear. Automatic or on-demand 4WD is only good for on-road situations. If it has diff locks, even better, but it isn't essential.

This is the situation in India:

Extreme offroaders: M&M 4x4 Jeeps, 4x4 Gypsy, Trax Gurkha/Gama (these have zero luxury features). Used as fulltime off-roaders than everyday car.

Very competent: LC prado, Pajero, Montero (All these are really expensive luxury SUVs, although Pajero has a plain jane interior)

Competent: Ford Endeavor, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Safari Dicor and Scorpio. (actually these are ones that are affordable to most off-roading fans unless they are willing to own an extreme off-roader from the first category)

There might be some questions about the last list, but you have to go by the owners opinions. Sudev's GV thread has cleared any doubts about GV abilities, and a horde of Safari 4x4 can vouch for their beast and a few Scorpio 4x4 owners too are happy with their 4x4 performance.

I'd put the Prado and old-gen Pajero in the extreme category. Trust me, I have seen what a Prado can do. Its got mind-boggling offroad capability.
