I can now faintly relate to what I experience in a TATA like Sedan (TATA because they dont make real sedans) - when coasting in, say, 3rd or 4th gear at a particular RPM - IF I give sudden throttle inputs on-off-on-off - I can feel the while gear stick moving back and forth a couple of MM's. I cant imagine how much CM's will it move in a Jeep, coz of the (very limited) 2 engine mounts and 1(?) GB mount.

Lets wait for Spike/Dhabar to write more on the use of a Spike Arrestor.

I have the spike arrester fitted but without the pipe. Any idea what should be the slack in the cable? Or is it supposed to be installed with no slack at all??!!

Hi Wolf,

I have seen only the cable attached in most of the Ex-Army MM550XD.

Has this system been carried over to the NGCS MM550XD?

Guess Spike and DB Sir and answer these queries.

From what I understood, there should be no slack at all, both in tension and compression (to arrest the spike ).

I am not sure if that is correct coz any integrated moving component needs to have minor clearances to aid flexing without which there is a possibility of breakage. My gear lever doesnt have any movement as it is and my mechanic set the spike arrester with may be a 10mm pre-load flex/clearance. Got to learn the right thing from an academic stand point now, the testing will be done spontaneously

The Return To Centre Steering Damper is for CJ5/6/7 made by Tough Dog (Australia).

Cost around 150-200AUD, a friend got it for me in June 2007.

Well, who does'nt? Arka's approach to building jeeps is truly commendable. Modifications suggested by him are simple yet render the vehicle extremely capable off road and reliable on road.

I have benefited immensely from the discussions I have had with him and several of his inputs go into the jeeps I build.

'When in doubt call Arka' is almost a protocol I follow, whenever I wish to try out something new on either my clients' jeeps or mine.

Hi Guys,

Went out for a rather unprepared off-road exploration.

I became a case study of what not to do for an OTR.

1) Went out in One vehicle. Once stuck had to wait 2hrs to get pulled out by Vikram (Headers) and Maj.SR Roy.

2) No Recovery Gear in the Vehicle, there were 5 of us we could have easily got the JEEP back on her wheels.

3) Carrying more than Driver & Navigator, had 3 passengers at the back, put them is a difficult situation and at risk of injury or worse. Thank god no one was injured, not a scratch.

4) Not wearing Seat Belts, I slid on top of my brother, while he was standing on the LHS Door.

5) Did not Roll-Down the Door Glasses, nothing happened, but the can be a cause for injury.

The result was one Damaged RHS ORVM, while climbing out, a minor dent on the LHS Rear Wheel Arch, the weight of the vehicle was on the Left hand Front and Rear Wheels, thanks to the wide-track they stick out from the body.

And off-course had to wait for 2Hrs before the cavalry arrived.

had faced similar situation 2 years back in a scorpio. (me driving & the next moment i was standing on front passenger door)
but it was a road accident & at 1.30 am in the morning. (one of the worst memories in my life)
