Hi Arka,

Can you share where did you buy these tires and for how much? Are these imported or is Goodyear making these in India. Tread looks promising. Any pics of your ride with these shoes on?

Cheers

Hi Vishwas,

I bought these tyres from a friend, who bought it off another friend, who bought it from Allan (extreme_power); who got these from South Africa.

Bought them Rs5500 per Tyre for 6 Tyres.

Arka

Arka,

I have read this thread in one sitting for the 3rd time in the last 2 years. I own an MM540XD and has learned a lot from here. Currently I am getting my vehicle prepared for the Bangalore OTR. One quick question I have is on the picture no: 5 where you come down the sandhill and move through the slush, was this on 1st gear 4L or 2nd gear 4L, while coming down the sand. and once you are down on that marshy area, what gears would you prefer to use on your 540.

Hope to see you again for the Bangalore event.

Thanks and Regards,
Vivek

Hi Vivek,

Way back in 2007 we were trying various techniques, like descending in 1st Lo and shifting to 2nd Lo. But this technique caused the vehicle to loose momentum.

So on "SAND" I prefer using 2nd Lo to make rapid ascends and descends, however on taller climbs 3rd & 4th Lo are used.

Arka

The main culprit was a worn out differential pinion Cross Shaft, this was causing the Auto-Locker Coupler to move a few mm causing the noise and throw.

After the re-installation the noise has been reduced by 95%, now the locker clicks at extreme turns or slaloms.

Arka,

When you changed to FFRA Bolero on your MM540, was there any differential strengthening that you had to do? Did this setup, cause any problems after installation, Which I guess not,as I remember you mentioning about the ruggedness of this setup over the SFRA some place else in this thread? is it possible to retain 5.38 diffs once we change to FFRA Bolero? the 57' front axles of Maxx and the 53'rear axles of Bolero, what model year onwards do you suggest for MM540 axle upgrade? Do advise, If I need to know anything additional in getting this setup done!!!

Hi Vivek,

The only problem I faced after switching the Axle Tubes on the 53" Bolero Axles/Housing, was the Spring Saddle/perch was not welded properly hence in the Avalakonda 2010, I ended ripping the rear propshaft.

Use the post 2006 OKBJ 57" Front Axle they come with Disc Brakes.

The differential ratio depends on the Dana 44 Carrier 3.73 and Down or 3.92 and Up. If you examine the current differential ratios in M&M JEEPs you will figure out which carrier to use.

Regards,

Arka

Hi arka,
you have a great off-roader there. I loved every bit of reading about it.
I understand you have changed the front axle with 57" OKBJ one and the rear one with 53". In the attached picture, the rear and front tires look aligned better. Have you put in any kind of spacers in the rear? If yes please can you guide me how you achieved this ?
i am looking to build a jeep using 2004 mm550 ngcs, hence my question. The scrawny rear sticks out like a sore thumb to my eyes. i was hoping in some not-harmful-to-the-jeep way, i could match the track widths. Or at least minimize the difference. Your advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy,

I haven't used any kind of spacer. since the picture is angled from the front the front & rear track look the same.

However to achieve 57" Front and Rear you will need 2" Spacers at the Rear.

Arka

Thanks for your prompt reply arka.
Will putting spacers have any adverse effects on the jeep ? The last thing i would want is to compromise the structural integrity of the jeep.

Aashish.

Please dont go in for Spacers - Modifying the Wheel Centreline will have impact on Steering, handling, suspension, and wheel bearings as well
